About this role

We are seeking a highly motivated and talented Research Associate to join the laboratory of Professor Ivana Barbaric at the University of Sheffield. This MRC-funded role investigates the intersection of mitochondrial genetics and human embryogenesis, conducted in close collaboration with Professor Tristan Rodriguez’s group at Imperial College London.

You will explore how mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) mutations influence cellular signalling pathways and tissue patterning during the earliest stages of human development. Mitochondrial dysfunction is increasingly recognized as a key driver of developmental failure. Using human pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs) as a model system, this project aims to:

Elucidate the mechanistic links between mtDNA mutations and altered signalling cascades; and Investigate how metabolic and signalling shifts driven by mitochondrial mutations impact embryonic patterning in 2D and 3D differentiation models.

This is a unique opportunity to contribute to fundamental discovery science with significant implications for understanding mitochondrial diseases and regenerative medicine.

Applicants must have a PhD (or be close to completion / have equivalent experience) in the areas of cell/developmental biology, mitochondrial genetics, or a related field along with specialist research experience in at least one of the following areas: 1. Culture and differentiation of human pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs); or 2. Mitochondrial biology (e.g., mtDNA mutations, metabolic profiling). Experience in qPCR and immunostaining/imaging techniques along with excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, report writing skills, experience of delivering presentations are also essential.

About the Lab & the University The Barbaric Lab is a world leader in hPSC genetic stability and cell fate decisions. Based in the School of Biosciences, we offer a vibrant, international, and inclusive culture. You will have access to state-of-the-art facilities, including high-content imaging, advanced microscopy, and cutting-edge flow cytometry suites.
