AI/Digital Tool Consultant

Level of Effort: Up to a maximum of 8 days, between October 19th and November 19th, 2026
Context
The WUSC Global Leadership Team believes that there remains a great deal of untapped potential in the deployment of digital solutions—including generative and agentic AI—to accelerate our progress toward our mission and vision. This includes the strategic deployment of digital tools in our programming to strengthen and scale up our ultimate impact, as well as in our internal operations to reduce administrative workload and improve our accuracy and capacity for data-informed decision making.
Opportunity
At the WUSC Global Leadership Team retreat in Accra Ghana this November, we are seeking someone who:
• Is a hands-on expert of Google Workspace and its AI capabilities such as Gemini, Gems, and Notebook.
• Is able to ‘audit’ the Global Leadership Team retreat on November 16th and 17th to better understand WUSC’s current operating context, including our primary objectives and the greatest challenges we face in meeting them.
• Can lead the design of and be the lead facilitator for the 3 hour ‘AI and Digital Tools’ workshop at the retreat on the 18th. We want to spend the session exploring how different solutions may help us better meet our objectives and address some of the challenges identified in earlier discussions throughout the retreat. This preparatory phase will include working with select staff members to prep tools to showcase in the clinics beforehand.
• Can possibly contribute to relevant discussions earlier in the retreat, such as sharing ideas on the potential risk of disruption AI brings to our sector and our work to the conversation on the Future of WUSC.
Objectives of the AI and Digital Tools Workshop
Getting Comfortable with Digital Experimentation to Identify Practical Solutions to Real Challenges
The 3 hour session on November 18th should primarily focus on best practices and practical applications of AI and digital tools in our work, especially within the Google ecosystem WUSC currently relies on. The leadership team has had several discussions now on the potential application of AI and digital tools, but still lacks personal tangible experience testing and using the tools. The session should allow participants to identify practical problems they face in their workflows or, perhaps, in their project delivery*, which the consultant could then help address with recommendations and demonstrations on specific tools. Our objective here is more about the process than any particular solution as we ultimately want to empower more of our leadership team to get creative and responsibly experiment with digital tools—especially AI—and for them to encourage this experimentation within their own teams after the retreat.
While we hope that some practical solutions will be identified during the workshop in the form of AppSheet applications, Gems, and Notebooks, the information provided and overall approach should ultimately support broader decision making around how WUSC can best invest our budget—in this year and beyond—to maximize the potential return on investment of our digital transformation efforts. This objective is connected to the workshop audit from the previous three days, where a better understanding of how we currently use AI and digital tools in our work can be fostered to help identify where we are missing important opportunities.
*We will ask GLT participants to start collecting their ‘grumble logs’ or common pain points in the months leading up the retreat. This will help surface real challenges.
Digital Disruption and Future Strategy
We want to invite the leadership team to consider the intersection of AI and other forms of digital disruption within the development sector, particularly in the context of our Future of WUSC discussions. Here are some questions for consideration:
• Why hasn’t the development sector been significantly impacted by digital disruption? What might change in the next few years (e.g., resourcing opportunities, funder motivations) that would bring greater disruption to our work? What trends should we be paying closest attention to?
• How might digital disruption introduce new players and new ways of working into our sector? Who would be motivated to start working in our sector and why? What kind of different, digitally-driven approaches might they take? How might digital disruption—and AI in particular—change the role our partners play in the development ecosystem? What would WUSC’s role be in these new contexts?
• How might WUSC better leverage digital technologies to enhance our impact, improve our results reporting, and deepen our relationships to ensure we remain competitive in our sector?
Note that these discussions will be separately led by Senior Manager, Digital Solutions and Data Governance at WUSC. However, the consultant is expected to actively participate in the design process to ensure the consistency and context relevance throughout the retreat.
Workshop Methodology
• After three packed days of discussion-based workshops, the best use of in-person time on the final day will ultimately be a hands-on, problem-solving workshop where participants actively design solutions to real challenges they face.
• During the retreat, the team could take identified problems and work in groups to design solutions using tools like Gemini and Notebook. This approach allows for peer-to-peer learning and ensures participants get practical experience in the design and development process.
• At the end of the workshop, the leadership team is expected to have a clear action plan for implementing the identified AI/digital solutions.
