About the role:

UpEnergy is seeking a skilled Quality Assurance Engineer to play a pivotal role in ensuring that UpEnergy products deployed across markets perform as designed, remain compliant with approved specifications, and generate reliable and auditable operational data. This role owns the in-market quality assurance layer between product design and real-world deployment, ensuring that scaling product programs maintain technical integrity across multiple countries.

This role will report to the Lead Engineer.

This position will be primarily based in Ghana, with a broader cross-market mandate across all of UpEnergy’s active markets.

Roles and Responsibilities:

• Global Oversight of Technical Aftersales/Product Support

• Own the technical coordination of UpEnergy’s Product Support Technician network across markets by maintaining active oversight of field issue reporting, follow-up actions, and product support workflows through the approved tracking and feedback channels.

• Drive reporting discipline across the technician network, ensuring that field issues, product failures, deployment observations, and follow-up actions are logged accurately, completely, and on time.

• Review technician reporting outputs on a regular basis, challenge gaps or inconsistencies, and use structured check-ins to monitor failure trends, recurring issues, and product support performance across markets.

• Use routine technical reviews with Product Support Technicians to dig deeper on common field issues, track closure of open items, and maintain visibility of product quality risks requiring escalation into the engineering pipeline.

• Market-Level Product Quality Assurance

• Plan and lead structured quality audits of deployed products across projects, with all outcomes routed into the engineering pipeline for corrective action and continuous improvement. Directly coordinating execution through country based technical teams as appropriate, while maintaining remote or in-person oversight and accountability for audit structure, findings, and follow-through. – Involving

• Sample-based inspections of in-field product physical condition

• Firmware and configuration status

• Calibration checks where applicable

• Installation and deployment conformity

• Data logging integrity, and verification that units continue to operate within approved performance envelopes.

• Plan and account for incoming QC for all imported finished products in accordance with approved protocols and in collaboration with the Global Supply Chain function, across the following categories,

• Electric Cooking (Household & Institutional)

• DMRV Technologies

• Safe Water Systems (Household & Institutional)

• DMRV Systems

• Manage and oversee outgoing QC, hardware release, installation, and retrieval of Retrofit DMRV hardware across all markets, ensuring strict adherence to approved SOPs by local project and technical teams.

• Conduct structured risk assessments on DMRV technology deployment and field usage to identify and mitigate in-operation risks, and maintain a centralized risk register to track issues, mitigation actions, and risk status across markets.

• Quality Protocols

• Co-develop product validation protocols in collaboration with the core engineering team.

• Coordinate local product testing and validation activities by establishing and maintaining relationships with local or regional certified laboratories

• Quality Feedback

• Manage and maintain the collection, channeling, and reporting of post-production quality feedback data across all UpEnergy products.

• Track field-facing product quality KPIs across markets, including infant failure rate, defect recurrence trends, installation non-conformance rate, firmware and configuration compliance, data integrity pass rate, audit pass rate, and field issue closure time, to distinguish deployment quality outcomes from factory manufacturing metrics.

• Serve as the primary field-to-engineering escalation point for post-production product quality issues originating from markets, ensuring technically grounded issue triage, evidence capture, and routing into the appropriate engineering, reliability, or manufacturing feedback channels.

• Support the development and strengthening of in-country technical aftersales service capacity.

• Co-develop and maintain user support materials, troubleshooting guides, and technical documentation in collaboration with product managers and engineering teams.

• Product & Technology Knowledge Transfer / Onboarding

• Coordinate technical knowledge transfer and onboarding for new and existing products across markets, including pilots and new deployments.

• Verify country-level deployment readiness prior to first product rollouts by ensuring:

• NEW product training for local product support personnel

• Product support material readiness

• Continuous Improvement

• Participate in product reviews as the field quality representative, ensuring real-world deployment insights inform engineering and product development decisions.

• Identify potential product quality risks during pilot phases, and work with engineering teams to ensure appropriate mitigation strategies are implemented.

Requirements:

This role requires an engineer who is willing to get close to the product, work through ambiguity in live operating environments, and translate on-the-ground product realities into clear technical judgment and action.

• Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering (preferred), Electrical/Electronic, Mechatronics, Industrial, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related technical field. Candidates with equivalent technical qualifications and strong hands-on experience in finished-goods product quality assurance will also be considered.

• At least 4 years of experience in product quality assurance, field quality assurance, quality management, or closely related roles for finished hardware products at scale.

• Experience supporting consumer, appliance, electromechanical, or electronically controlled products through pilot deployment, field validation, and early-stage market rollout.

• Experience investigating product failures, quality deviations, and field non-conformances, including root cause analysis and implementation of corrective and preventive actions.

• Experience monitoring and evaluating product performance in real-world operating environments, including identification of drift, misuse, or deployment-related quality issues.

• Experience working across multi-site or multi-country product deployments, with the ability to coordinate quality activities through distributed technical teams.

• Ability to travel regularly to operational sites to conduct quality audits, product evaluations, deployment readiness checks, and technical onboarding support.

• Comfortable operating as a field-oriented engineer, deriving sound technical judgment from product behavior in live deployment environments rather than relying solely on desk-based quality review.

• Technical Expertise

• Experience with FMEA, risk management, and root cause analysis tools.

• Strong grasp of electrical and electronic system fundamentals.

• Familiarity with firmware-controlled hardware systems.

• Familiarity with data logging systems, and interpretation of device-generated data.

• Ability to use basic electronic test equipment such as multimeters, clamp meters, power analyzers, and other diagnostic tools.

• Ability to interpret engineering documentation, including technical drawing packets, product specifications, test procedures, etc

• Strong technical documentation skills, including preparation of inspection reports, quality assessments, and technical observations.

• Communication and Collaboration

• Ability to communicate technical findings clearly and effectively to both engineering teams and non-technical operational stakeholders.

• Strong collaboration skills, with experience working across engineering, product development, operations, and field teams to resolve product quality issues.

• Location & Travel Requirements

• This position will be primarily based in Ghana, with a broader cross-market mandate across all of UpEnergy’s active markets.

• The role requires regular travel across UpEnergy project markets in Africa to conduct product quality assessments, technical onboarding, and field inspections.

• Candidates must demonstrate high flexibility for international, regional, and in-country travel, including short notice travel to operational sites and manufacturing partners when required.

• Ability to work effectively in field environments and project deployment sites.
