About this role

Job Summary The High School Drama Club Sponsor provides leadership, instruction, and administrative oversight for the Ottumwa High School theatre program. The Sponsor is responsible for planning, directing, and executing a multi-show theatrical season (two mainstage shows per school year) at the OHS Auditorium, including major plays and musical productions. This role fosters a creative, inclusive, and safe environment that encourages student growth in the performing arts and coordinates closely with the OHS Speech program. This position is a year round requirement, consisting of many hours of preproduction work and educational experience for students. Key Performance Responsibilities

• Artistic Direction & Production

• Select age-appropriate theatrical works (plays, musicals, or variety shows) that align with district standards.

• Create full direction of the production, and manage all aspects of the performance and preparation.

• Audition, cast, and rehearse student performers for all seasonal public productions.

• Rehearsals for productions take place after school hours, and usually happen two to three times per week, plus weekends.

• Coordinate and educate students on all aspects of stagecraft, including set design, lighting, sound, costuming, makeup, and props.

• Direct backstage operations, ensuring technical elements are executed safely and efficiently.

• Student Supervision & Club Management

• Oversee regular meetings and activities of the OHS Drama Club and Thespian Society..

• Maintain high standards of student conduct and discipline during all rehearsals, meetings, and performances.

• Supervise student crews involved in set construction, stage management, and technical theater operations.

• Mentor students to build confidence, public speaking skills, teamwork, and artistic growth.

• Program Administration & Operations

• Secure production rights, scripts, and musical scores in compliance with licensing regulations.

• Collaborate with the Activities Director to manage the program budget, tracking all expenses and production revenues.

• Manage ticket coordination and publicity for performances using district-approved platforms.

• Coordinate scheduling with the Activities office for OHS Auditorium availability to ensure no conflicts with other school activities or external community usage.

• Provide occasional educational opportunities for students with field trips or discussions with collegiate or professional theatrical companies.

• Collaboration & Community Relations

• Work alongside the OHS Speech Team coaches to assist students competing in IHSSA (Iowa High School Speech Association) Large Group and Individual events.

• Communicate effectively with parents regarding rehearsal schedules, production fees (if any), and volunteer opportunities.

• Build partnerships with community arts organizations (e.g., Ottumwa Civic Playmakers) to promote local theater involvement.

Qualifications & Requirements

• Education/Experience: Background in theater arts, directing, dramatic literature, or stage management is highly preferred.

• Skills: Excellent communication, organizational skills, budget management abilities, and a proven track record of managing large groups of adolescent students.
