About this role

Suttons Bay Public Schools is seeking a student-centered, collaborative, and caring High School Guidance Counselor to support students in grades 9–12. The counselor will provide academic, college, career, and social-emotional support while helping students develop successful post-secondary plans. Essential Responsibilities

• Provide individual and group counseling and student support

• Monitor student progress toward graduation and assist with academic planning and course selection

• Counsel students regarding college, career, trade school, military, apprenticeship, and employment opportunities

• Assist students with college applications, scholarships, financial aid, and post-secondary planning

• Coordinate career exploration, college visits, and other college/career readiness activities

• Identify students needing additional academic or social-emotional support and coordinate appropriate interventions and referrals

• Collaborate with students, families, teachers, administrators, and community agencies

• Maintain accurate and confidential student records

• Develop and implement a comprehensive school counseling program aligned with student needs and district goals

• Support school-wide efforts related to attendance, achievement, student well-being, and post-secondary readiness

• Perform other duties as assigned by the administration

• Develop, implement, and annually review Educational Development Plans (EDPs) with all students and their families.

• Provide intentional, individualized support to students in identifying and completing applicable scholarship opportunities.

• Plan and facilitate informational sessions for students and families interested in Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs and Dual Enrollment opportunities.

Required Qualifications

• Master's degree in School Counseling or completion of an approved school counselor preparation program

• Valid Michigan School Counselor License (SCL) or Michigan teaching certificate with School Counselor (NT) endorsement

• Candidates holding a valid Preliminary School Counselor License (PSCL) or Temporary School Counselor License (TSCL) may also be considered, consistent with Michigan Department of Education requirements

• Strong communication, organization, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills

• Ability to establish positive relationships with high school students and families

• Commitment to student confidentiality and professional ethics

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous high school counseling experience

• Knowledge of Michigan graduation requirements and college/career pathways

• Experience with college admissions, FAFSA, scholarships, and career planning

• Familiarity with student information and college/career planning systems
