Position: Extended Day Nurse Location: Downey & Pine Hill Elementary Schools & District Buildings, Westwood, MA Schedule: Five days per week during Extended Day Program + Alternate/Scheduled Substitute Coverage POSITION OVERVIEW Westwood Public Schools is seeking a dedicated, compassionate, and skilled nurse to support student health and wellness within our Extended Day Program at Downey & Pine Hill Elementary Schools, with additional substitute/coverage responsibilities across the district. This role offers flexible employment structures. Qualified candidates may choose between a Salaried Position or an Hourly Position based on their scheduling preferences and compensation needs. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES
• Clinical Care & Assessment: Provides complex, comprehensive nursing care for Extended Day students. Displays advanced clinical knowledge when establishing plans of care, evaluating data, and documenting student responses.
• Medication & Compliance: Administers medications, ensures signed release forms are stored properly, and reinforces compliance and medication safety with students.
• Emergency Preparedness: Develops and maintains emergency care plans, ensuring staff and students understand proper procedures.
• Wellness & Education: Promotes student wellness through classroom and program presentations that inspire healthy lifestyle choices.
• Collaboration & Communication: Initiates regular communication with teachers, administrators, and support staff. Engages respectfully and proactively with families regarding student healthcare needs and concerns.
• Documentation & Office Management: Maintains detailed, accurate, and timely records. Ensures proper, secure storage of all office medical supplies and medications.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Registered Nurse (RN) license required. MA DESE School Nurse license preferred/encouraged.
• Previous pediatric nursing experience in a K–5 elementary school setting required.
• Active continuing education coursework in areas relevant to nursing licensure.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & PERSONAL QUALITIES
• Deep understanding of pediatric medical knowledge, nursing techniques, and typical developmental characteristics.
• Thorough knowledge of governmental regulations, district resources, and community healthcare supports.
• Strong interpersonal skills to establish rapport, comfort, and trust with elementary-aged students.
• Invariably ethical, honest, and transparent with impeccable judgment and strict adherence to confidentiality.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS & JOB ENVIRONMENT
• Job Environment: Primarily indoors in classrooms, offices, gym, and cafeteria, with some outdoor responsibilities (e.g., recess or dismissal). High-performing school district environment.
• Physical Demands: Requires standing, walking, sitting, bending, reaching, and carrying/lifting up to 30 lbs. Sufficient visual and auditory acuity required for student observation and screen work.
COMPENSATION & EMPLOYMENT OPTIONS Option A: Salaried Contract
• Annual Base Salary: $45,013 per school year.
• Work Year: 201 days total. 183 Extended Day program days (180 school days + 3 professional days) plus 18 pre-scheduled district substitute coverage days.
• Schedule: 3:00 PM – 6:00 PM on standard school days; 12:00 PM – 6:00 PM on early-release Wednesdays; 7-hour workdays on the 18 scheduled substitute coverage days.
• Benefits: Eligible for district health and insurance programs, paid sick leave (10 days), paid personal leave (2 days), and paid holidays.
Option B: Hourly Position
• Pay Rate: $50.00 – $65.00 per hour (commensurate with experience).
• Structure: Paid hourly for direct hours worked during Extended Day program operating hours and alternate Wednesday coverage.
• Schedule: Afternoon/early evening shifts tied directly to student attendance days and program operations (3:00 PM – 6:00 PM standard days; 12:00 PM – 6:00 PM early-release Wednesdays).
