Position Summary The Custodian is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, sanitary, and orderly environment within assigned school or district facilities. This position performs routine custodial and housekeeping duties, assists with facility setups, monitors building conditions, and performs minor maintenance tasks as needed. The Custodian supports the overall cleanliness, safety, and functionality of the school environment for students, staff, and visitors. Essential Duties and Responsibilities
• Maintains assigned facilities in accordance with district standards for cleanliness, sanitation, safety, and appearance.
• Performs routine custodial duties, including sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, vacuuming, stripping, waxing, and maintaining floors and other surfaces.
• Cleans and sanitizes restrooms, classrooms, offices, common areas, and other assigned spaces.
• Cleans windows, doors, walls, fixtures, furniture, and other building surfaces as needed.
• Properly uses, stores, and maintains custodial equipment, tools, and cleaning supplies.
• Follows established procedures for the safe handling, use, storage, and disposal of cleaning chemicals and materials.
• Monitors and maintains appropriate building temperatures using designated heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning controls.
• Assists with the setup, arrangement, and cleanup of facilities for school activities, meetings, athletic events, and other special events.
• Performs minor maintenance and repair tasks within the scope of the position and reports maintenance concerns requiring additional attention.
• Maintains an adequate supply of custodial materials and communicates supply or equipment needs to the appropriate supervisor.
• Identifies and promptly reports safety hazards, building concerns, damage, or needed repairs.
• Secures assigned areas and follows established procedures for building access, keys, alarms, and safety.
• Performs other related duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Minimum Qualifications
• High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
• Knowledge of general custodial practices, cleaning methods, and sanitation procedures.
• Knowledge of the proper use and care of custodial equipment and tools.
• Working knowledge of cleaning chemicals and safe handling procedures.
• Ability to follow oral and written instructions and established safety procedures.
• Ability to work independently and effectively manage assigned responsibilities.
• Ability to maintain a clean, safe, and orderly environment.
• Previous custodial, housekeeping, or institutional maintenance experience is preferred.
Physical Requirements
• Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, climb, and reach for extended periods.
• Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials, supplies, and equipment as required.
• Ability to perform repetitive physical tasks associated with custodial and facility maintenance duties.
• Ability to work in a variety of indoor and outdoor conditions as required by the position.
