About this role

SUBSTITUTE CUSTODIAN QUALIFICATIONS:

• Previous custodial experience preferred; or demonstrated ability to successfully learn and perform required custodial duties, as determined by the Facilities Management Department.

• Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with staff, students, and others.

• Basic knowledge of custodial and housekeeping practices, procedures, materials, and equipment, or ability to acquire such knowledge through training.

• Ability to safely operate custodial equipment and properly use District-approved cleaning products and chemicals in accordance with established procedures.

• Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions.

• Ability to work independently and complete assigned tasks within established timeframes.

• Ability to work at various District buildings, work locations, and shifts based on operational needs.

• Valid driver's license may be required for assignments involving travel between District locations.

• Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the District may find appropriate and acceptable.

REPORTS TO: Custodial Managers, and designated building custodial leadership.

JOB GOALS: Under the direction of the Custodial Managers and District Head Custodian, the Call-In Custodial Substitute provides temporary custodial coverage throughout the district as needed. This position performs custodial work required for the routine care, cleaning, protection, and preservation of assigned district buildings and grounds. The Call-In Custodial Substitute may be assigned to different buildings, shifts, and work areas depending on district staffing needs.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Maintains a safe, clean, sanitary, secure, and orderly environment in assigned areas.

• Demonstrates flexibility, adaptability, and cooperation in responding to daily custodial and building needs.

• Performs routine custodial duties, including sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, cleaning and disinfecting surfaces, and emptying trash and recycling.

• Cleans, sanitizes, and restocks restrooms and other assigned areas.

• Follows established District custodial procedures, cleaning schedules, safety practices, and building-specific instructions.

• Properly and safely uses District-approved cleaning products, chemicals, supplies, tools, and equipment in accordance with established procedures and training.

• Identifies and promptly reports maintenance concerns, safety or security hazards, equipment problems, property damage, and unusual building conditions to the appropriate supervisor.

• Assists with setup, cleanup, and custodial support for school activities, meetings, programs, and events as assigned.

• Assists in protecting District facilities, equipment, and property from loss or damage and reports concerns to the appropriate supervisor.

• Performs minor custodial-related tasks consistent with the employee's training, experience, and ability.

• Performs exterior custodial duties as assigned, which may include snow and ice removal, maintaining entrances and walkways, emptying exterior trash containers, and reporting damage or unsafe conditions.

• Communicates effectively and professionally with custodial staff, building administrators, Facilities Management personnel, and other District employees.

• Reports to the assigned building and work area at the scheduled time for all accepted assignments and follows applicable building check-in and check-out procedures.

• Follows District safety requirements and uses required personal protective equipment when performing assigned duties.

• Performs other duties as assigned.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

• Work is performed in both indoor and outdoor environments and may occur throughout various District buildings and grounds.

• May be exposed to dust, dirt, cleaning products, chemicals, fumes, and other substances commonly encountered in custodial work.

• May be exposed to inclement weather, temperature extremes, and ultraviolet (UV) radiation while performing outdoor duties.

• May be exposed to blood, bodily fluids, bloodborne pathogens, and other potentially infectious materials.

• May work in wet or slippery conditions and around equipment, machinery, and other potential workplace hazards.

• May be required to work various shifts, including early mornings, evenings, or other hours based on District needs.

• Appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) will be provided and/or required as applicable to assigned duties.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: This is a non-contract position. Substitute positions work on call as needed for various assignments/buildings throughout the district. This position is on-call and as needed. Hours, shifts, buildings, and length of assignments may vary. No minimum or guaranteed number of hours is provided.
