Urbana School District #116 TITLE: Community School After-School Child Care Worker LOCATION: Dr. Preston Williams Jr. Elementary School SUPERVISOR: Community School Administrator The Community Schools After-School Child Care workers will join the Community Schools Programming at Dr. Preston Williams Jr. Elementary. The program seeks energetic, patient, and reliable people to create a safe, engaging, and nurturing space for children whose parents are attending adult education courses. Child care workers may work with early childhood children (ages 3-5) or elementary-aged children (5-11). ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Early Childhood Care (Ages 3-5)

• Assist with bathroom breaks and basic hygiene, such as handwashing.

• Lead sensory play, read books, play with toys, and simple arts and crafts.

• Plan fun indoor and outdoor games, and gross and fine motor activities.

Elementary Youth Care (Ages 5-11)

• Supervise dedicated homework time and offer basic tutoring or reading and math help.

• Organize basic sports, group games, or interactive projects.

• Help older children navigate peer social dynamics and resolve conflicts positively.

General Duties

• Maintain visual contact at all times and stay highly alert during indoor and outdoor playground play and supervision duties.

• Supervise snacks and strictly follow child allergy guidelines.

• Provide friendly, professional updates to parents and guardians at pickup.

• Disinfect toys, organize supplies, and keep the play and work areas clean and neat.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

• Ability to build and sustain collaborative relationships; good people skills

• Strong organizational, project management, and event coordination skills

• Good verbal communication skills

• Ability to engage and motivate students across diverse backgrounds

• Ability to use de-escalation strategies and manage challenging behaviors

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Minimum of 1 year working with children in a licensed childcare facility, preschool, school, or camp setting.

• High school diploma or equivalent preferred; Associate's or bachelor's degree in education preferred

• CDA (Child Development Associate) or coursework in Early Childhood Education is highly encouraged.

• Current CPR and First Aid certifications (or willingness to obtain after hire).

• Ability to pass a criminal background check, fingerprinting, and child abuse registry clearance.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

• This is a non-exempt position.

• For the 2026-2027 School Year only

• This position is dependent on grant funds (grant-funded)

Hours: Part-time, Monday through Thursday, 5:15 pm – 8:00 pm or Monday/Wednesday & Tuesday/Thursday schedule Pay Rate: $20.00 per hour EVALUATION: The performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with the provisions of the Board's policy on the evaluation of professional personnel.
