About this role

This is an opportunity to gain practical experience in a professional barbershop environment, learn from experienced barbers and develop skills as a Barber Assistant under the Workplace Experience Programme. Under supervision and appropriate training, the trainee will have the opportunity to: • Assist experienced barbers with day-to-day work in the barbershop. • Learn and develop basic barbering techniques and skills. • Observe professional hair-cutting, styling and grooming techniques. • Assist with preparing workstations and equipment. • Maintain a clean, tidy and hygienic working environment. • Welcome customers and develop good customer-service skills. • Learn about professional standards and barbershop procedures. • Assist with general duties within the shop. • Gradually develop practical barbering skills as training and competence progress. Training & Development The successful participant will receive guidance and practical training within the barbershop. The aim is to help the trainee develop: • Basic barbering and hair-cutting skills. • Knowledge of tools and equipment. • Customer-service and communication skills. • Workplace confidence and professionalism. • Understanding of hygiene and health-and-safety procedures. • Experience of working as part of a team. • A better understanding of what is involved in working as a professional barber. This is a training and work experience opportunity; no prior experience in this role is necessary. Accredited and/or sector recognised training will be provided to support your placement. Participants are eligible to participate in the WPEP QQI Work Experience Module which was developed by the Education & Training Boards in collaboration with the Department of Social Protection. This optional module will fulfil your accredited training requirements for the WPEP. The participant will receive formal/informal training and mentoring in the following: Accredited/Sector Recognised Training: • Infection Prevention & Control in Barbering (or equivalent hygiene course) • Health & Safety Awareness • Customer Service Skills Informal/DailyTraining: • Client consultation techniques • Hair styling and finishing • Health, safety and hygiene procedures • Equipment cleaning and maintenance • Customer service and communication • Appointment management • Daily opening and closing procedures • Product knowledge and recommendations
