Malahat Nation is looking for the right candidate to join our Community Programs Department.Malahat Nation places great importance on increasing the participation and success rates of Malahat Nation members in education, training, and development. This position is ideal for you if you are an innovator able to engage in the community and you have a strong desire to make a difference in our community and a commitment to cultural safety that reflects Malahat values and Coast Salish teachings.PURPOSE: Reporting to the Director of Community Programs, the Education Liaison will provide supports to children, youth, families, and staff in navigating the public education system (K to 12) to foster better educational outcomes for the children and youth we serve. The main purpose of this role is to advocate and help students succeed by developing and maintaining relationships with including but not limited to students, parents and / or guardians, teachers, administrators, and community agencies.This position is a full-time, permanent position which requires majority of the work executed in community, as well as moderate local travel within the local School District 79 as needed.RESPONSIBILITIES:Education Liaison between Students, Parents and School District Assist families and advise on education and school issues that may arise Attend monthly check in meetings with Education Employment and Training Coordinator and School District 79 Organize events and activities that support families i.e. parent info sessions, parent teacher meet n greets with local schools, other school and / or community events hosted by Malahat Nation Oversee gathering and tracking of sharing of information agreements from parents Review student Individual Education Plan (IEP) and general student learning support plans, to ensure wrap around supports are provided for students Collaboratively support in the creation of Personal Life Plan (PLP) for students through their education Direct and support students and families to access schools, community and government resources that support the pursuit of educational and career goals Provide literacy support programming and or homework groups for students and student family groups Provide 1-on-1 student supports as neededLocal Education Agreement (LEA) Assist in the achievement of the goals of the Malahat Nation and School District 79 Local Education Agreement (LEA) including organizing LEA working group meetings, agenda creation, tracking of minutes and communication Provide awareness and share information of the LEA to parents and teachersCommunication & Engagement Provide a forum for focus groups and information sharing for parents and community through monthly parenting meetings and focus sessions on education At the request of parents/ guardians, provide meeting support with parents, students, teachers and support staff Facilitate building relationships between families and the school Consult and collaborate with teachers, school counsellors, support staff and Malahat Nation Education staff as needed Advocacy at a district and provincial level for adherence to the LEA, TRC recommendations and UNDRIP Administra
