About this role

The Minnesota Star Tribune is an innovative modern media organization building on an extraordinary 159-year legacy. With seven Pulitzer Prizes and numerous other accolades, we stand as a beacon of journalistic excellence in Minnesota. We are the heart and voice of the North.

Our mission is to build a better Minnesota by connecting us with the people, ideas, and stories that strengthen our communities. We're seeking dynamic leaders who are passionate about journalism and democracy to help shape this future. If you are excited about reinventing one of our state's most trusted institutions and leading us into a new era of growth and excellence, we want to hear from you.

We are seeking a driven and visually sophisticated journalist to join our photo team as a Digital Visual Producer at our headquarters in Minneapolis MN.

The Digital Visual Producer is a hands-on production role that shapes how the Star Tribune's photo and video report is presented and published across platforms. From breaking news and live coverage to homepage presentation, social aesthetic and section fronts, this person will play a critical role in ensuring that our journalism is visually compelling, timely, accurate and thoughtfully presented. This producer will work closely with journalists across the newsroom to make fast, thoughtful decisions about the visuals that accompany and elevate our journalism.

We are looking for someone with strong news judgement, a sophisticated visual eye and the ability to move quickly in a live news environment. The work is highly collaborative, but this role also requires independence and initiative. A strong candidate will be comfortable making quick editorial decisions, responding to emerging news and identifying opportunities to improve the visual presentation of our journalism. This role reports to the Assistant Managing Editor, Photo & Video. This position could include weekends, holidays and evening shifts.

The strongest candidates will be nimble, curious, organized and energized by the pace of a live newsroom. They will have a strong foundation in visual journalism and an instinct for what makes an image or video compelling, informative and appropriate for the moment. They should be comfortable balancing speed with accuracy and editorial judgment. They should be equally attentive to the highly visible parts of the job — making a great photo selection or improving a homepage presentation — and the essential details that make a visual operation function, including captions, metadata, accessibility and archive organization.

Responsibilities

• Select, tone, crop and caption images transmitted from the field by Star Tribune photographers.

• Execute priorities set by the photo editors, focusing on live and developing coverage, including selecting and publishing staff, wire, submitted and other approved imagery and video.

• Exercise strong editorial judgment in determining how visual storytelling can support a story, even when original photography is not available.

• Curate and refresh the homepage and other digital presentations throughout a news cycle.

• Create and oversee platform-specific crops and vertical versions for social, mobile and other digital formats in collaboration with the audience team.

• Assist with quick-turn and same-day video production and editing, as needed.

• Assist photo editors in responding to breaking news and identifying emerging visual opportunities.

• Maintain high standards for captions, metadata and image and maintain the integrity and searchability of the Star Tribune's visual archive.

• Assist with rights, permissions and distribution workflows.

• Collaborate closely with design, graphics, audience and video teams to create cohesive and effective visual presentation.

Qualifications

• A strong, developing visual sense and demonstrated editorial judgment for still photography and video.

• Experience selecting and publishing visual journalism, or equivalent experience through internships, student journalism, freelance work or other professional environments.

• The ability to make thoughtful, timely visual decisions in a deadline-driven environment.

• Experience working with Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Premiere, Photo Mechanic.

• Experience publishing or preparing visuals for digital platforms, including cropping and adapting images for different formats.

• A working understanding of photojournalism ethics, captioning standards, copyright and image rights.

• Strong organizational skills, attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple priorities independently.

• Comfort shooting still photography and video in the studio and in the field.

• Must be currently legally authorized to work in the U.S. without sponsorship for employment visa status (e.g., H1B status, 0-1, TM, CPT, OPT, etc.). We are unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment Visa at this time.

Preferred

• Experience editing quick-turn video or creating video for digital and social platforms.

• Experience sourcing and working with wire, handout, archive or stock imagery.

• Familiarity with social and platform-native visual storytelling, including vertical video.

• A portfolio demonstrating photo editing, photography, video editing or other visual journalism work.
