About this role

Who is BGM?

BGM offers entrepreneurs, business owners, organizations, and individuals a wide range of advisory, audit, accounting, and tax services to meet business and personal needs.

We go beyond solving problems—we anticipate needs, provide insight, and uncover opportunities. Our team partners with clients across a wide range of industries to deliver meaningful results.

Primary Purpose

BGM is seeking an experienced tax professional to join our Connecticut office in a key leadership and succession role. This position offers a unique opportunity to work alongside the office’s current leaders over the next several years, building relationships with employees and clients and gaining a deep understanding of the practice before ultimately stepping into leadership of the location as those leaders retire.

We are open to candidates at different points in their leadership journey. This could be an excellent opportunity for an experienced Senior Tax Manager who is ready for greater responsibility and has the potential to grow into a Principal and office leadership role with mentorship and guidance. It could also be a great fit for an established Principal or senior leader who is ready to take on this responsibility today and values the opportunity for a thoughtful, collaborative transition.

In either case, this individual will play an important role in the future of our Connecticut practice—serving clients, developing staff, growing relationships, and gradually taking on greater responsibility for the people, clients, business, and overall success of the office.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

• Work closely with current Connecticut leadership to learn the office, client base, team, and business while preparing for future leadership responsibility

• Build strong relationships with employees and clients to support a smooth, thoughtful leadership and client transition

• Maintain and grow a significant book of business while serving as a trusted advisor to clients

• Review complex multi-state business and individual tax returns and provide guidance and feedback to staff

• Provide proactive, year-round tax planning and strategic advisory services

• Research and consult on complex federal, state, and local tax matters

• Identify additional planning and service opportunities based on clients’ business and personal needs

• Provide leadership, coaching, and development to professionals within the Connecticut office

• Oversee staff workflow, client assignments, and engagement execution

• Participate in recruiting, developing, mentoring, and retaining high-performing team members

• Develop relationships with existing clients, prospective clients, referral sources, and members of the local business community

• Participate in business development and networking efforts to support continued growth of the Connecticut practice

• Identify opportunities to connect clients with additional BGM services and expertise

• Partner with BGM corporate leadership and shared service teams to ensure the Connecticut office remains connected and aligned with firmwide strategies and initiatives

• Take on increasing responsibility for office leadership, operations, staffing, client relationships, and business performance throughout the leadership transition

• Ultimately serve as the senior leader and primary point of contact for the Connecticut office, with responsibility for the staff, clients, business, and overall success of the location

Required Qualifications and Skills:

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field

• 10+ years of progressive public accounting experience with an emphasis on complex business and individual taxation

• CPA designation strongly preferred

• Significant experience managing client relationships and a book of business

• Strong tax planning, strategy, research, and technical skills

• Experience leading, coaching, and developing professional staff

• Strong client service skills and the ability to develop trusted, long-term relationships

• Interest and demonstrated potential in business development, networking, and growing client relationships

• Strong business judgment and the ability to balance client service, people leadership, and competing priorities

• Ability to operate independently while also valuing collaboration, mentorship, and partnership with other leaders

• Strong organizational and communication skills

• Desire and ability to grow into broader practice and office leadership responsibilities

Prior experience leading an office, practice group, department, or significant team is a plus, but not required. We are equally interested in candidates who have demonstrated strong leadership potential and are ready to take the next step in their career.

Why This Opportunity?

This isn't a role where you'll be expected to step in on day one and immediately take over an established office. You'll have the opportunity to work directly with the leaders who have built the relationships, knowledge, and history of the Connecticut practice and learn alongside them before they retire.

For someone ready for their next step, this provides a clear path toward Principal-level leadership with experienced leaders available to mentor and support the transition. For someone who already has that experience, it provides the opportunity to contribute immediately while taking the time to build relationships and thoughtfully transition leadership.

The long-term opportunity is significant: to lead BGM's Connecticut office and take ownership of its people, clients, business, and continued growth.
