About this role

Job summary

The Private Patient - Service Manager, will be responsible for the effective delivery and performance, of private patient services across St. George's University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust sites. Reporting to the Assistant General Manager, the post-holder will oversee all aspects of private patient activity; outpatient, inpatient and outlier service coordination, consultant engagement, administrative leadership, financial management, compliance, and service improvement. The post holder requires strong leadership, resilience and excellent communication skills.

The role will ensure that private patient services are delivered to the highest standard of quality, efficiency, and patient experience, in line with Trust strategy and regulatory requirements. Acting with a high level of autonomy, the post-holder will manage complex operational challenges, and support the modernisation and growth of private patient services at St. George's. The post will also play a pivotal role in service planning, performance reporting, and project implementation, and deputise for the Assistant General Manager when required.

This is an exciting time to join the Private Patients Team at St. George's as the Trust looks to expand its Private Patient offering and revenue, allowing reinvestment into frontline NHS Clinical Services.

Main duties of the job

We are looking to recruit an experienced, innovative and strong leader. Possessing excellent communication and interpersonal skills, you will have with the ability to work well under pressure; meeting the challenges of working to deadlines and will be comfortable working with colleagues at all levels of the organisation.

You will have excellent managerial skills and experience - someone who is positive and focused on delivering service excellence - and someone who can lead a team to achieve service change positively and effectively to deliver departmental and Trust strategic objectives.

As the Private Patients Service Manager you will need to:

Lead the day-to-day operational management of the Private Patients Service. Ensure delivery of efficient and effective private patient pathways across outpatient, inpatient and diagnostic services. Maintain high standards of patient-centred care, customer service and operational performance. Ensure services are responsive, accessible and aligned with agreed quality standards. Develop and maintain effective operational procedures supporting booking, admissions, billing, pre-authorisation and discharge processes. You will need to demonstrate an understanding of the NHS and the current operational performance agenda and how performance and service delivery is managed across a large complex organisation.

Person Specification

Qualifications and Training Essential

Degree level or equivalent qualification/equivalent level of experience Evidence of on-going professional development.

Desirable

Managerial qualification, acquired through degree or equivalent experience sufficient to demonstrate the necessary operational management experience required including staff and financial management Project management qualification.

Experience Essential

Significant operational management experience within healthcare or a complex service environment. Experience within an NHS Private Patient Team or Private Healthcare environment. Experience of working with consultants and private practice arrangements. Experience of tariff setting, billing processes and income recovery. Experience of private patient admissions, outpatient and diagnostic services Experience of managing and developing teams. Evidence of excellence, innovation and achievement in management practice.

Desirable

Evidence of successful operational leadership and effective involvement in change management.

Skills Essential

Evidence of problem solving skills and ability to respond to sudden unexpected demands. Ability to interpret complex operational and financial data. Plans collaboratively with others, co-ordinates and monitors the delivery of services and/or projects with clear quality indicators and timescales. Able to prioritise own work in an environment of changing and sometimes conflicting priorities Able to promote the building of effective teams and collaboration between teams

Desirable

Able to deliver Cost Improvement programmes (CIP) or Divisionally approved income targets. Advanced business planning and service development skills. Experience of developing business cases and growth strategies.

Knowledge Essential

Strong understanding of healthcare operational management. Knowledge of patient pathways and service delivery models. Knowledge of NHS and private patient tariffs Excellent demonstratable knowledge of Ethics and operational pressures of Private patient processes, legal frameworks and requirements in line with Trust policies and Standard Financial Instructions (SFIs). Knowledge of HR policies and procedures in the NHS

Desirable

Demonstrable understanding of NHS commissioning and funding frameworks, including NHS tariff structures, coding, charging mechanisms, and Payment by Results (PbR) methodologies. Knowledge of PHIN, Healthcode and CCSD requirements. Knowledge of Department of Heath guidance regarding private patients.
