Job Title: Party Chief / Survey Crew ChiefJob DescriptionThe Party Chief / Survey Crew Chief supervises and participates in technical land surveying work, leading a field crew and ensuring accurate, efficient execution of boundary, topographic, ALTA/ACSM, and construction surveys. This role involves planning and organizing daily field activities, training and mentoring crew members, maintaining survey equipment, and enforcing safety standards. The Party Chief performs field calculations, oversees data collection and documentation, and regularly communicates project status to office staff to support high-quality deliverables and successful project outcomes. Responsibilities • Lead and supervise a field survey crew in the execution of boundary, topographic, ALTA/ACSM, and construction surveys. • Plan, organize, and coordinate daily field activities to meet project schedules and quality standards. • Perform field survey calculations using algebra, geometry, and trigonometry to support accurate measurements and layout. • Operate and oversee the use of GPS, robotic instruments, total stations, and related survey equipment. • Collect, verify, and document survey data in the field, ensuring completeness, accuracy, and proper file management. • Interpret construction plans, legal documents, and survey specifications to guide field work and ensure compliance with project requirements. • Train, mentor, and support junior crew members in survey techniques, equipment use, and safety practices. • Maintain survey equipment in good working order, including basic troubleshooting, calibration, and care in the field. • Communicate project status, field issues, and data collection progress clearly and promptly to office staff and project stakeholders. • Apply and follow safety procedures, including traffic control safety standards, to protect the crew and the public in various field conditions. • Adhere to company policies and procedures related to safety, drug-free workplace, and personnel practices. • Support quality control efforts by reviewing field measurements and records for accuracy before submission. • Travel to project sites as needed, including trips outside the immediate area that may require overnight or weekend stays. Essential Skills • Demonstrated experience leading survey crews in the field. • Strong land surveying knowledge, including boundary, topographic, ALTA/ACSM, and construction surveys. • Proficiency in GPS and robotic survey instruments, including total stations. • Ability to perform survey-related calculations using algebra, geometry, and trigonometry. • Strong documentation skills for recording and organizing field data. • Effective verbal and written communication skills to coordinate with field and office teams. • Proven leadership skills to supervise, train, and mentor field crew members. • Experience interpreting construction plans, engineering drawings, and legal documents related to land boundaries and easements. • Knowledge of general surveying principles, equipment operation, and field techniques. • Familiarity with safety practices, including traffic control safety standards and drug-free workplace policies. • High school diploma or GED. • Minimum age of 18 years. • Valid driver’s license with the ability to travel to various project sites. • Ability to obtain DBIDS or Rapid Gate Pass as required by specific project locations. • Physical ability to frequently lift 25 pounds and regularly lift up to 50 pounds. • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather and terrain conditions. Additional Skills & Qualifications • Familiarity with PMI safety and personnel policies. • Experience with specific data collectors and survey instruments such as Topcon and Trimble GPS systems. • Working knowledge of AutoCAD for reviewing or supporting survey drawings and data. • Understanding of traffic control requirements and standards for work on or near roadways. • Steel toe boots required for field safety. • Interest in ongoing professional development, including pursuing surveying licenses and certifications. • Ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented, field and office environment. • Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality, accurate survey data. Work EnvironmentThis role is primarily field-based and involves outdoor work in a variety of weather and terrain conditions, including construction sites, undeveloped land, and areas with wildlife and plant materials. The position requires frequent lifting of up to 25 pounds and regular lifting of up to 50 pounds, as well as standing, walking, and moving equipment throughout the workday. Travel of up to approximately 20% outside the local area is required, which may include overnight and weekend stays depending on project needs. Field work takes place around active construction and traffic, so adherence to safety and traffic control standards is essential. Steel toe boots are required as part of the field dress code, and you will use advanced survey technologies and equipment such as GPS units, robotic instruments, total stations, and data collectors.
