Job summary

Elizabeth House Medical Practice is looking for an enthusiastic, caring and reliable Healthcare Assistant with phlebotomy expereince to join our friendly and supportive practice team.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Healthcare Assistant who enjoys working directly with patients and being part of a busy general practice team.

The successful candidate will work alongside our GPs, Practice Nurses, Clinical Pharmacist and wider practice team to provide high-quality care to our patients. We are looking for someone who is professional, approachable, well organised and able to work both independently and as part of a team.

Previous experience of working within general practice or another healthcare setting would be desirable. Phlebotomy experience is essential, although training and support can be provided to develop additional HCA skills and competencies.

We are particularly looking for someone who takes pride in their work, communicates well with patients and colleagues and is willing to contribute positively to the continued development of our nursing and clinical team.

Main duties of the job

The role will involve providing a range of Healthcare Assistant and phlebotomy services to our practice population.

Elizabeth House Medical Practice is a friendly GP practice based in Warlingham, Surrey, caring for a practice population of over 6,000 patients.

HEALTH CARE ASSISSTANT / PHLEBOTOMIST

HOURS: 28 hours per week hours to be negotiated over 4 days

Job summary

Working under the direct supervision of the nurse practitioner and senior practice nurses and strictly in accordance with specific practice guidelines and protocols, the healthcare assistant will assist the practice clinical team in the provision and delivery of prescribed programmes of patient care.

Duties and responsibilities:

New patient health checks

ECG recording

Phlebotomy

Minor wound care under the direct supervision of the practice nurse

Flu vaccination and pneumococcal under PSD completed by GP

Chaperoning duties

Checking trollies in clinical rooms to ensure stock is in date and available for all clinicians

Check the emergency trolley weekly

To order pathology supplies and medical supplies.

Ensure stock rotation and recording of deliveries

Monitor fridge temp each morning on the remote website, in line with the cold chain policy

Processing and management of laboratory samples requested by GPs/nurses

Assisting in the assessment and surveillance of patients health and well-being

Helping to raise awareness of health and well-being, and how it can be promoted

Assisting with the collection and collation of data on needs related to health and well-being

Assisting the admin in the booking of annual reviews and recall for new patient health checks

Using personal security systems within the workplace according to practice guidelines Awareness of national standards of infection control and cleanliness, and regulatory / contractual / professional requirements, and good practice guidelines Responsible for the correct and safe management of the specimens process, including collection, labelling, handling, use of correct and clean containers, storage and transport arrangements Management and maintenance of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for the practice, including provision, ordering, availability and ongoing correct usage by staff Responsible for hand hygiene across the practice Ownership of infection control and clinically based patient care protocols, and implementation of those protocols across the practice Active observation of current working practices across the practice in relation to infection control, cleanliness and related activities, ensuring that procedures are followed and weaknesses / training needs are identified, escalating issues as appropriate Identifying the risks involved in work activities and undertaking such activities in a way that manages those risks across the clinical and patient process Making effective use of training to update knowledge and skills, and initiate and manage the training of others across the full range of infection control and patient processes Monitoring practice facilities and equipment in relation to infection control, ensuring that provision of hand cleansing facilities, wipes etc, is sufficient to ensure a good clinical working environment. Person Specification

Experience Essential

Essential Previous experience working in a healthcare or patient-facing environment. Experience of taking blood samples independently and safely. Ability to communicate effectively and sensitively with patients. Understanding of patient confidentiality and information governance. Ability to work independently within agreed competencies and recognise when clinical advice is required. Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team. Good organisational and time-management skills.

Desirable

Previous experience as a Healthcare Assistant/Phlebotomist within general practice or primary care. Experience using EMIS or a similar clinical system. Experience undertaking HCA procedures such as ECGs, blood pressure monitoring, NHS Health Checks, urinalysis, wound care and suture/staple removal. Experience of clinical stock management and maintaining clinical areas.

Desirable

Desirable Care Certificate, Healthcare Assistant qualification or equivalent. Relevant clinical training and competency certificates. Training in ECGs, NHS Health Checks, wound care, suture/staple removal, urinalysis and blood pressure monitoring.
