About this role

Job summary

Overriding purpose is to support the provision of highest quality patient care through personal actions and continuous improvement. Responsibility for the core consultant activity of day to day running & leadership of the clinical activities in the paed intensive care and continued clinical presence in the units during the day ward rounds, emergency & post-operative admissions when on for PICU. Participate in network activities related to critical care. Organising network teaching activities were requested & liaising with one or more of the critical care networks referring centres. Responsibilities for carrying out teaching, examination & accreditation duties as required & contributing to undergraduate, postgraduate, continuing medical education activity, locally & nationally.2 consultants are always on call for intensive care, giving each Unit (general and cardiac) separate & independent consultant cover and a third on call during the day to provide support. The service is consultant led, and often consultant delivered, depending on the clinical acuity of patients and the experience of the middle grade clinical staff. On-call commitments are predominantly non-resident; with a resident component in Cardiac PICU until 22:00, transitioning to non-resident on-call thereafter. Consultants may additionally be required to remain or become resident beyond this period, depending on clinical activity and service demand, at their professional discretion across both the units.

Main duties of the job

This is a locum post to cover maternity cover for 9 months. The current contractual commitment is for 10 core programmed activities per week, with additional 1 PA.

The average weekly PA allocations are: 9DCC programmed activities, including 0.5PA for patient administration. 1.5 SPA for CPD, audit, mandatory training, Revalidation etc. to be taken flexibly.

Whole time consultants within the Trust are allocated 1.5 PA's for Supporting Professional Activities (SPA) in order to support the requirements of revalidation, which include activities such as participating in audit, CPD and mandatory training. Up to a further 1 PA may be made available for SPA by mutual agreement with the CMG as part of the job planning process. This must constitute appropriate verifiable SPA activity that supports an individual's professional development and provides benefit to UHL.

The post-holder will participate in medical audit, the Trust's clinical governance processes, and CPD (included in the job plan), with mandatory attendance at audit and governance meetings. The role also includes clinical management, including budgetary responsibilities where appropriate, and compliance with the Trust's standing orders and financial instructions. In line with GMC Good Medical Practice, all duties must be carried out to the highest standard and in accordance with current quality improvement initiatives.

Job description Job responsibilities

The overriding purpose is to support the provision of highest quality patient care through personal actions and continuous improvement.

The post-holder is expected to participate in teaching and training of junior staff and other clinical staff groups. The appointee will also have supervision responsibilities for junior medical staff within the specialty. If appropriate the post-holder will be named in the contract of junior staff as the person responsible for overseeing their training and as an initial source of advice to such doctors regarding their careers.

The post-holder will participate actively in research relevant to paediatric intensive care including the development and delivery of studies within the directorate.

There will be opportunities to act as Principal Investigator for NIHR portfolio studies and to support a research-active culture within the service.

The role also includes participation in audit and quality improvement activities, and contributing to the development of teaching and research in collaboration with the University of Leicester. The post-holder is expected to fulfil the requirements of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health CPD scheme (or equivalent), with CPD supported within the job plan and mandatory attendance at audit and governance meetings.

MB BS or Equivalent MRCPCH/MRCP/FRCA or equivalent Full GMC Registration On GMC Specialist Register for base specialty at the time of application or Within 6 months of obtaining CCT for UK RCPCH trainee or On the GMC specialist register for PICM at the time of application (if CESR/portfolio) pathway

Desirable

Membership of relevant Specialist Societies or Associations Higher degree e.g. MD, PhD or equivalent.

Knowledge and Experience in Subspecialty Essential

Completion of RCPCH Progress PICM Curriculum and 2 years training in an RCPCH PICM ISAC approved centre rotation in paediatric intensive care medicine plus a minimum of six months of anaesthetic training OR equivalent training programme with evidence that this training has been completed and signed off Extensive experience in management of cardiac patients including post op cardiac surgical patients Clinical Knowledge and Expertise: Appropriate knowledge base and ability to apply sound clinical judgment to problems; demonstrates clear, logical thinking/analytical approach; understands evidence -based practice Undertake basic and advanced intensive care procedures IT Skills, ability to use web browser, excel, word etc. Willingness to develop skills and experience in areas of interest Advanced Paediatric Life support provider or equivalent Level 3 Child Protection training

Experienced in or have had training in the provision of palliative care in children Experience in managing complex long -term patient s Expertise in use of POCUS, Echocardiogram or similar advanced technologies in paediatric critical care Experience managing level 2 paediatric critical care patients in HDU or equivalent
