About this role

Job summary

You will be working as part of a small and friendly Dispensary team, preparing and issuing medications safely, efficiently and accurately in accordance with Practice protocols. You will also deal with general enquiries and telephone calls from patients, GPs and other healthcare organisations regarding medication.

The ideal candidate will be a caring and reliable team player who is able to work confidently both independently and as part of a team. You will need to have excellent attention to detail, good organisational skills and a commitment to providing a high standard of patient care.

About us

Yalding Surgery is a friendly, modern purpose-built dispensing GP practice serving a patient population of over 7,000. We dispense medication for over half of our patients.

Our clinical team consists of 5 GPs, a paramedic, 2 Practice Nurses, 1 Health Care Assistant and an GPA. We have 3 full-time dispensary staff, supported by a large reception and administration team, including our Practice Manager and Operations Manager.

We are a supportive team and are committed to providing a high standard of care to our patients.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Title: Dispenser Department: Dispensary

Duties include, but are not limited to:

Taking and processing requests for repeat medications

Preparing prescriptions upon receipt of requests

Completing VenaLink packs for community patients, including scripting, stock management and assembly.

Receiving pharmaceutical deliveries twice daily and storing stock appropriately in accordance with manufacturers instructions

Maintaining appropriate stock levels to minimise patient owings

Opening the dispensary at the start of the day and closing it at the end of the day

Handing out prescriptions at the counter and taking payment where applicable

Responding to patient queries regarding prescriptions

Acting as a chaperone during doctor consultations when required

Safely disposing of patient-returned medications

Assisting with stock checks and date checking

Maintaining the cold chain

Handling controlled drugs and maintaining accurate records in the designated folder

Checking patient exemption statements are accurate and up to date

Ensuring the dispensary area is kept clean, tidy, and that equipment is properly maintained

Using computer systems to keep records up to date

Processing medication requests in accordance with Practice protocols and escalating any queries or concerns to the appropriate clinician.

Assisting, where possible, in meeting targets relating to dispensing doctor schemes

Providing cover for staff annual leave and sickness

Sourcing stock items classified as special items

Attempting to source out-of-stock products from alternative suppliers

Returning over-ordered or incorrectly ordered items to suppliers

Person Specification

Experience Essential

Good attention to detail and accuracy Good communication and interpersonal skills Ability to work effectively as part of a team Ability to work independently when required Good organisational skills Basic computer skills Commitment to patient confidentiality

Desirable

Experience working in a GP practice

Qualifications Essential

Level 2 qualification in Dispensing/Pharmacy Services
