Job summary

The Theatre Arrivals Sister will provide effective clinical and operational leadership within the Theatre Admissions/Arrivals area, ensuring that patients are safely assessed, prepared and transferred through the perioperative pathway in a timely, compassionate and efficient manner.

Working as an experienced Registered Nurse, the post holder will provide visible leadership to the nursing and support team, promoting high standards of patient care, safety and professional practice. They will work closely with surgical, anaesthetic, theatre and multidisciplinary colleagues to ensure that patients are appropriately prepared for their procedure and that the operating theatre pathway runs smoothly.

The post holder will act as a senior clinical resource within the department, supporting staff with complex clinical situations, escalation of concerns and effective decision-making.

Main duties of the job

As the Band 6 Theatre Arrivals Sister, you will provide senior nursing leadership within the Theatre Arrivals area and ensure that patients receive safe, effective and compassionate care from arrival through to transfer into theatre.

Assess patients on arrival for surgery, ensuring they are appropriately prepared and clinically fit to proceed.

Complete and oversee essential pre-operative safety checks, including patient identity, consent, procedure, site marking, allergies, observations, investigations and relevant clinical documentation.

Ensure patients are appropriately prepared for anaesthesia and surgery, escalating any concerns.

Provide reassurance and support to patients and their relatives, helping to reduce anxiety.

Ensure that patient dignity, privacy, equality and individual needs are respected at all times.

Allocate staff and workload according to patient needs, clinical priorities and staff competence.

Support colleagues with complex patients and provide advice based on your clinical knowledge and experience.

Work collaboratively with surgeons, anaesthetists, ODPs, recovery staff, ward teams and other healthcare professionals to provide seamless patient care.

Promote and monitor compliance with infection prevention, medicines management, safeguarding and other Trust policies.

Help create a positive team culture where staff feel supported, valued and accountable for delivering excellent patient care.
