About this role
TEKLA STEEL DETAILER / DRAFTSPERSON
Company: Spur Industrial Location: Cresson, Texas Position: Full-Time | On-Site
POSITION SUMMARY
Spur Industrial is looking for an experienced Tekla Steel Detailer / Draftsperson to support our structural and miscellaneous steel fabrication projects.
This is a hands-on detailing position. You will create and maintain Tekla models and produce accurate shop, fabrication, assembly, and erection drawings used directly by our fabrication and field teams.
We are looking for someone who understands that a good drawing has to work beyond the computer screen. Dimensions need to be accurate, connections need to fit, revisions need to be controlled, and the finished drawings need to give the shop and field what they need to build and install the work correctly.
This position works closely with Project Management, Production, Quality, and our fabrication team. Occasional job-site visits may be required for field measurements and verification.
RESPONSIBILITIES
• Create and maintain Tekla Structures models for structural and miscellaneous steel projects.
• Produce accurate shop drawings, fabrication drawings, assembly drawings, and erection details.
• Detail stairs, handrails, ladders, platforms, equipment supports, structural framing, embeds, frames, and other fabricated steel components.
• Read and interpret structural, architectural, engineering, and project drawings.
• Incorporate approved changes, RFIs, field conditions, and revisions into Tekla models and drawing packages.
• Review drawings for dimensions, material, connections, welds, bolts, fit-up, and constructability before release.
• Identify conflicts, missing information, dimensional issues, and conditions that could create problems during fabrication or installation.
• Clearly communicate drawing questions and conflicts to the appropriate Project Manager or responsible party.
• Coordinate with Production and Quality when fabrication or drawing questions arise.
• Maintain accurate and organized models, drawings, revisions, and project files.
• Perform field measurements and verify existing conditions when required.
• Correct drawing issues and incorporate approved changes in a timely manner.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Working experience with Tekla Structures.
• Experience producing steel shop, fabrication, or erection drawings.
• Ability to read and understand structural, architectural, and engineering drawings.
• Working knowledge of steel fabrication methods and terminology.
• Ability to understand dimensions, connections, weld symbols, bolts, material callouts, and fabrication details.
• Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
• Ability to manage revisions and multiple project priorities while maintaining drawing control.
• Ability to communicate clearly with Project Managers, Production, Quality, and other team members.
• Ability to work independently while also working effectively with the larger project and fabrication team.
• Ability to work full-time, on-site at our Cresson, Texas facility.
EXPERIENCE WE VALUE
The following experience is preferred but is not required for consideration:
• Miscellaneous steel detailing, including stairs, handrails, ladders, platforms, equipment supports, frames, and similar fabricated components.
• Structural steel detailing.
• Experience working directly with a steel fabrication shop.
• Experience taking a project from contract drawings through approved fabrication drawings.
• Experience producing erection drawings and details.
• BIM coordination experience.
• Field measurement and existing-condition verification.
• Associate degree, drafting certificate, technical training, or equivalent industry experience.
A degree is not required if you have the experience and can demonstrate that you know the work.
WHAT SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE
We are looking for someone who takes ownership of their drawings.
That means:
• Checking your work before someone else has to find the mistake.
• Asking questions when something does not make sense.
• Identifying problems early, before they reach the shop or field.
• Keeping models and revisions organized and current.
• Understanding how drawing decisions affect fabrication, installation, schedule, quality, and cost.
• Communicating clearly when information is missing or conflicting.
• Accepting feedback from the shop, field, Quality, and Project Management and using it to improve the work.
Our detailers are expected to identify problems and raise questions. They are not expected to make unapproved engineering or design changes. When contract documents conflict or design information is incomplete, the issue should be identified and communicated to the appropriate Project Manager or responsible party for resolution.
THE PERSON WE'RE LOOKING FOR
We are not simply looking for someone who knows how to operate Tekla.
We want someone who understands steel detailing and fabrication and can look at a drawing and think about how the steel will actually be fabricated, assembled, shipped, and installed.
The right person is dependable, organized, comfortable asking questions, and willing to take responsibility for the quality of their work.
You don't need to know everything on day one. You do need to have a solid Tekla foundation, understand steel drawings, and be willing to learn how Spur Industrial does the work.
