ABOUT OUR DISTRICT: The Syracuse City School District is undergoing a new phase of innovation and transformation with the goal of ensuring that all students graduate high school with the skills needed to be ready for college and career. The School Board and Syracuse community have charged the Superintendent with improving student achievement, and he is seeking a dedicated and diverse team of school leaders and teachers to partner with him in moving the district toward its goals. The Syracuse City School District represents 34 schools and 4 alternative education programs, serving 19,000+ students Pre-K-12 of whom 77% qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, 18% are served by the Office of Special Education and 78% are students of color. LOCATION: Varies by availability. WORKING HOURS: This position will work 37.5 hours per week, 10 months per year. This position is full-time. SALARY/COMPENSATION: The starting salary for this position is $40,492 per the Unit 10 contractual agreement DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS (Labor) The work involves responsibility for assisting in the care of handicapped and/or special education children attending school. An employee in this class performs work under direct supervision, in accordance with established policy and routine. This position requires the ability to lift students. The employee may also be responsible to administer simple treatments and to perform routine clerical tasks when not assisting with the children. Does related work as required. TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

• Lifts students in and out of wheelchairs; lifts students on to stretchers; loads and unloads handicapped children from busses cars or vans,

• Assists in the toileting of handicapped children by taking to the toilet, changing and cleaning.

• Assists in dressing and undressing of children including removing outer garments, rain gear, dressing for swimming classes, and changing clothing as needed.

• Performs simple, routine clerical tasks when free from other tasks and responsibilities, which may include filing, making notes to charts, and simple unskilled typing tasks.

• Performs minor cleaning tasks.

• May assist in the physical therapy treatment of handicapped children by performing the very routine tasks such as lifting and adjusting braces and crutches.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE SKILLS ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

• Working knowledge of the materials and processes involved in moving, clothing and caring for children with handicapping conditions.

• Ability to lift and move children with handicapping conditions.

• Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.

• Ability to get along well with children with handicapping conditions.

• Strength and agility.

• Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
