Michael Baker International is seeking a Transit Architectural Designer / Technical Specialist to join our growing Architecture practice. This role will support the planning, design, and delivery of transportation, transit, federal, aviation, and adaptive re-use projects throughout the United States.
The successful candidate will work as part of a multidisciplinary team of architects, planners, engineers, and transit professionals to develop innovative design solutions for passenger facilities, transit stations, operations facilities, multimodal transportation centers, and other public-facing transportation environments. This position is ideal for a design professional with transit architecture experience and a strong background in passenger experience, wayfinding, signage, accessibility, and graphics.
This role offers the opportunity to contribute to complex transit and public infrastructure projects while helping shape how people navigate and experience transportation environments.
RESPONSIBILITIES
• Support the planning, design, and documentation of transportation, transit, federal, aviation, and adaptive re-use projects. • Assist with programming, space planning, conceptual design, schematic design, design development, and construction document preparation. • Prepare architectural drawings, renderings, presentations, specifications, and other technical documentation. • Participate in multidisciplinary project teams including architects, planners, civil engineers, structural engineers, MEP engineers, and specialty consultants. • Collaborate with project managers and technical leads to meet project schedules, budgets, and quality objectives. • Conduct site investigations, field assessments, and existing conditions documentation. • Participate in client meetings, stakeholder workshops, and project presentations. • Support code research and application of applicable building codes, transit standards, and accessibility requirements. • Assist in the development of design studies, reports, and technical evaluations. • Contribute to quality reviews and coordination efforts throughout project development.
TRANSIT ARCHITECTURE & WAYFINDING RESPONSIBILITIES
• Develop transit wayfinding strategies that improve passenger experience, navigation, safety, and accessibility across transportation facilities. • Design and coordinate wayfinding systems for rail stations, bus facilities, multimodal transportation centers, airports, and public infrastructure environments. • Support the development of signage programs, graphics, passenger information systems, and station branding initiatives. • Analyze passenger circulation patterns, decision points, sightlines, accessibility requirements, and user experience considerations. • Apply ADA, universal design, and inclusive design principles to passenger-facing environments. • Coordinate wayfinding solutions with transit operators, facility owners, planners, architects, engineers, and specialty consultants. • Assist in the preparation of wayfinding master plans, signage standards, graphic guidelines, and implementation packages. • Support transit-oriented development, station modernization, and passenger facility improvement projects. • Conduct site audits and existing conditions assessments to identify navigation and accessibility improvements. • Participate in stakeholder engagement activities related to passenger experience, customer information, and station design.
PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS
• Bachelor's degree in Architecture, Interior Architecture, Environmental Design, Industrial Design, Graphic Design, or related field. • 5+ years of professional experience supporting architecture, transportation, transit, public sector, or infrastructure projects. • Experience with SignAgent software • Experience preparing construction documents and technical design packages. • Working knowledge of building codes, accessibility requirements, and construction materials and systems. • Experience collaborating within multidisciplinary project teams. • Strong verbal, written, and presentation communication skills.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Experience with rail, transit, aviation, or passenger facility projects • Experience developing transit wayfinding, signage, environmental graphics, or passenger information systems • Familiarity with ADA station design and transportation facility design • Understanding of passenger experience planning and human-centered design principles. • Experience coordinating with public agencies, transit authorities, or transportation clients. • Knowledge of station design, multimodal hubs, transit-oriented development, and public realm projects. • Graphic communication and visual storytelling skills.

Compensation:
The approximate compensation range for this position is $111,000 to $155,000 per year. This compensation range is a good faith estimate for the position at the time of posting. Actual compensation is dependent upon factors such as education, qualifications, experience, skillset, and physical work location.
