Job summary
The Department of Sedation and Special Care at GSTT is seeking a 7 PA part time Consultants in Sedation and Special Care.
The postholder will provide Consultant-led specialist dental care for patients requiring Special Care Dentistry and Sedation services at Guy's & St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust. This includes assessment, treatment planning and delivery of complex dental care under local anaesthesia, sedation and general anaesthesia where clinically appropriate.
The role will combine specialist clinical practice with leadership, supervision, teaching, quality improvement, research and service development. The postholder will supervise Specialty Dentists and junior dental staff, contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate education, and support clinical governance and audit.
Working closely with multidisciplinary teams, the postholder will promote safe, evidence-based and patient-centred care, ensure effective patient pathways and waiting times, and contribute to the ongoing development and improvement of the service.
Applicants must be fully registered with the GDC and on the GDC
Specialist Register in Sedation and Special Care be accredited or within six months of such accreditation at interview stage and have completed a SAC approved training programme or equivalent

Job description Job responsibilities
The postholder will provide consultant-led, specialist oral health care for patients requiring Special Care Dentistry within Guys & St Thomas NHS Foundation Trust. The role will involve the delivery of high-quality, patient-centred dental care for individuals with complex needs, including treatment provided under local anaesthesia, conscious sedation and, where clinically appropriate, general anaesthesia.
The postholder will work collaboratively with consultant colleagues and the wider multidisciplinary team to ensure safe, effective and equitable access to specialist dental services. They will have a significant leadership, supervisory, teaching, research, quality improvement and service development role within the department and the wider Trust.
The postholder will maintain continuing clinical responsibility for patients under their care, while ensuring appropriate delegation, supervision and development of junior dental staff and other members of the clinical team.

Eligible for full UK GDC registration and a Licence to Practise On GDC Specialist List in Special Care Dentistry or within six months of attaining CCST
Desirable
Higher academic degree relevant to Special Care Dentistry, MSc, PhD etc One, or more of the following or equivalent qualifications: FDS RCS, MFDS RCS Diploma, Certificate or Membership (RCS) in Sedation / Special Care Dentistry
Professional Qualifications Essential
Eligible for full UK GDC registration and a Licence to Practise Possession of a Certificate of Accreditation or eligibility for a CCST in Special Care Dentistry
Desirable

Clinical Experience and Skills Essential
Clinical experience expected of a consultant in Special Care Dentistry. Experience / training such that the applicant has reached a standard considered equivalent to that expected after 3 years of specialist training in Special Care Dentistry. Recent experience of dental treatment under both Basic and Advanced conscious sedation Recent experience in treating medically compromised / special care patients Experience of contributing to a multidisciplinary team Experience of assessing and treating ward patients needing Special Care Dentistry
Audit Managment & IT Essential
Understanding of clinical governance and risk management in the secondary care setting Management skills and effective leadership for the NHS environment and specifically clinical service delivery Understanding of principles of clinical audit Effective participation in audit including implementation of outcomes Evidence of understanding of and adherence to the principles of Good Dental Practice set out by the General Dental Council

Knowledge and experience of setting up a service Participation in multidisciplinary audit
Research / Teaching Skill & Experience Essential
Experience in training under-graduate and post-graduate students and StRs in Special Care Dentistry, including sedation techniques Experience of organisation of teaching programmes in Special Care Dentistry Knowledge of research ethics
