Job summary
The Medical Imaging Service Line at Derriford Hospital and its peripheral sites provides diagnostic and treatment pathways for a wide range of emergency and elective patients across the South West through the use of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Computed Tomography (CT), Ultrasound (US), Interventional Radiology (IR), Plain Film (PF), Nuclear Medicine and Fluoroscopy.
To provide a high-quality patient-centred service across Derriford Hospital, the Community Diagnostic Centre and other peripheral imaging locations as required. To support the effective day-to-day delivery and operation of the Imaging Department, ensuring safe and efficient patient flow and optimal use of resources. To supervise and coordinate the Imaging Care Assistant (ICA) workforce, providing operational leadership, staff support, roster management and service cover across multiple imaging modalities and locations. To participate in and support a seven-day service, including evenings, weekends, bank holidays and emergency cover in line with departmental requirements. The Imaging Care Assistant Team Leader plays a key role in ensuring high standards of patient care, dignity and safety throughout the patient journey. The post holder will provide leadership and line management for the ICA team, oversee staffing and training requirements, support workforce development, and act as a liaison between clinical leads, managers and frontline staff.
Main duties of the job Lead, supervise and support the Imaging Care Assistant team across all imaging locations. Coordinate staffing rotas, annual leave, sickness absence and overtime using Healthroster. Ensure patients receive compassionate, safe and effective care while maintaining dignity, privacy and confidentiality. Support patient preparation, observations, point-of-care testing and cannulation where trained and required. Assist patients with mobility, transfers, dressing and escorting throughout the department. Oversee staff induction, mandatory training, competency assessment and annual appraisals. Maintain clinical areas, equipment checks, infection prevention standards and stock control. Use departmental IT systems, including CRIS and EPIC, and support reception and patient administration functions when required. Contribute to quality improvement, patient safety initiatives and service development within the Imaging Directorate.
Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, as well as 'Priority' and 'At Risk' status including NHS at Risk staff throughout Devon who is able to display recent relevant experience as dictated by the Person Specification.

The Imaging Care Assistant Team Leaders are responsible for supporting the safe, effective and efficient delivery of imaging services across Derriford Hospital, the Community Diagnostic Centre and peripheral sites. The post holder will work along side another Team leader to provide day-to-day operational support for patients attending Imaging, whilst also supervising and coordinating the Imaging Care Assistant workforce.
Main responsibilities include:
Accompanying patients to and from imaging departments and examination rooms, providing appropriate support, reassurance and assistance with changing, dressing and undressing where necessary, ensuring patient dignity and privacy are maintained.
Assisting Radiographers, Sonographers, Registrars and Radiologists during imaging examinations and procedures, using appropriate manual handling techniques and mechanical aids where required.
Transporting patients safely in wheelchairs, beds or on trolleys between wards, departments and imaging locations, and moving equipment where required to support service delivery.
Providing emotional and physical support to patients who may be anxious, distressed, vulnerable or receiving complex care, and communicating effectively with relatives and carers.
Undertaking patient observations, point-of-care testing and cannulation, where trained and competent, to support diagnostic imaging pathways.
Maintaining clean, safe and suitably stocked clinical areas, carrying out equipment checks, infection prevention activities and reporting faults or concerns promptly.
Assessing infection risks and applying appropriate infection prevention and control precautions in accordance with Trust policies.
Registering and booking patients using departmental systems including CRIS and EPIC and, in the absence of the Inpatient Coordinator, prioritising patient transfers and coordinating portering requests.
Supervising and coordinating the Imaging Care Assistant team, supporting induction, competency assessment, training, appraisal and roster management to ensure safe staffing levels across all imaging areas.
Organising and prioritising workload effectively to maintain efficient patient flow, minimise delays and contribute to the smooth operation of Imaging services.
