About this role

Job Title: Electrical DesignerJob DescriptionThe Electrical Designer will design and develop electrical schematics and control panel layouts for custom automation equipment and machinery using EPLAN and/or AutoCAD Electrical. This role focuses on creating detailed cabinet designs, terminal block layouts, wiring diagrams, and panel thermal management solutions that comply with North American electrical standards and industry regulations. The position offers the opportunity to work across the full project lifecycle—from concept and design through manufacturing, integration, and commissioning—while collaborating closely with multidisciplinary engineering and manufacturing teams on complex, high-profile automation projects. Responsibilities • Design and develop electrical schematics using EPLAN and/or AutoCAD Electrical for custom automation equipment and machinery. • Create detailed control panel layouts, cabinet designs, terminal block layouts, and wiring diagrams that meet project and customer requirements. • Design electrical systems for custom automated equipment and manufacturing systems, ensuring functionality, reliability, and maintainability. • Size and specify panel thermal management systems, including cooling fans and air conditioning units, to ensure proper heat dissipation and component protection. • Ensure all electrical designs comply with North American electrical standards and applicable industry regulations. • Generate accurate bills of materials (BOMs) and supporting electrical documentation for manufacturing, integration, and commissioning activities. • Collaborate closely with mechanical designers, controls engineers, project managers, and manufacturing teams to ensure cohesive and integrated system designs. • Support troubleshooting activities and implement design modifications during manufacturing, assembly, and commissioning phases. • Participate in design reviews, provide technical input, and incorporate feedback to improve system performance and manufacturability. • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives by identifying opportunities to standardize designs, improve processes, and enhance overall design quality. • Work on multiple custom automation projects simultaneously, adapting designs to unique customer specifications and evolving project requirements. • Engage with multidisciplinary teams to resolve technical issues, clarify design intent, and ensure timely project delivery. Essential Skills • 3–5 years of experience in electrical design, preferably within automation, machine design, or related industrial environments. • Proficiency with EPLAN and/or AutoCAD Electrical for developing electrical schematics, panel layouts, and wiring diagrams, with a preference for experience in both tools. • Hands-on experience with machine design, including control panel design, cabinet layouts, terminal block layouts, and panel thermal management such as fan and air conditioning sizing. • Strong knowledge of North American electrical standards and the ability to design systems that comply with relevant codes and regulations. • Ability to generate accurate bills of materials (BOMs) and comprehensive electrical documentation to support manufacturing and commissioning. • Experience designing electrical systems for custom automation equipment and automated processes. • Capability to collaborate effectively with mechanical designers, controls engineers, project managers, and manufacturing teams in a project-based environment. • Skill in troubleshooting electrical designs and implementing modifications during manufacturing and commissioning. • Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing accurate, compliant, and well-documented designs. • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, to clearly convey design intent and collaborate with cross-functional teams. Additional Skills & Qualifications • Background in automation environments, with experience from industries such as pharmaceutical, biomedical, or other automated process industries considered an asset. • Experience working on complex, custom-built machinery and automated manufacturing systems. • Familiarity with advanced control systems and industrial automation technologies. • Exposure to full project lifecycle work, from concept and design through manufacturing, integration, and commissioning. • Interest in continuous learning and expanding expertise in EPLAN, AutoCAD Electrical, control panel design, and custom machine building. • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, project-driven environment with shifting priorities and deadlines. • Strong problem-solving skills and a desire to tackle complex engineering challenges in industrial automation and machine design. Work EnvironmentThe Electrical Designer will work in a fast-paced, project-driven engineering environment focused on the design and development of custom automated equipment and manufacturing systems. The role is primarily office-based, with most time spent creating electrical schematics, control panel designs, cabinet layouts, and supporting documentation using EPLAN and/or AutoCAD Electrical. The work is highly collaborative, bringing together electrical designers, controls engineers, mechanical designers, project managers, and manufacturing personnel to deliver complex automation solutions for customers across a range of industries.

Because the equipment is custom-built, each project presents unique engineering challenges that require innovative thinking and tailored solutions. Designers regularly engage with manufacturing and assembly teams to support equipment builds, troubleshoot issues, and implement design improvements throughout the project lifecycle. The environment emphasizes technical excellence, teamwork, and ownership of work, making it well suited for individuals who enjoy dynamic settings where priorities can shift based on project needs and deadlines.

The culture encourages idea-sharing, cross-disciplinary collaboration, and professional growth, particularly for those interested in industrial automation, machine design, and electrical systems. As a contract role, this position provides the opportunity to quickly make an impact, gain exposure to high-profile automation projects, and expand expertise in EPLAN, AutoCAD Electrical, control panel design, and custom machine building within a recognized leader in automation. Dress is typical of an engineering office environment, appropriate for both office-based design work and occasional time on the manufacturing floor.
