Applications are being accepted for the 2026-27 school year Teacher Apprentice Journeyworker program. Somerset County Public Schools is participating in the Maryland Registered Teacher Apprentice Program. Requirements: Be a full-time employee of Somerset County Public Schools (SCPS) who wants to pursuing a teaching degree and licensure. Target audience applicants: SCPS Paraprofessionals. What is a Registered Teacher Apprentice? A Registered Teacher Apprentice is a school system employee who continues working while completing no-cost college coursework and learning with a trained mentor, known as a “journey worker." Approved on-the-job training replaces some traditional coursework, so apprentices receive credit for skills developed through their daily work. ESMEC is partnering with Salisbury University, Chesapeake College, and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) to support the pathway to a degree and teacher licensure. Why become a teacher apprentice? Complete your degree at no cost to you. Choose in-person or virtual classes while you continue working and earning your paycheck. Learn with a dedicated mentor, also known as a “journey worker" Receive guidance and feedback from an experienced educator.
