About this role

Job summary

Applications are invited for a clinical Fellow ST8 level post, offered by the Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, based at Worcestershire Royal Hospital. This is a fixed-term post for a period of 12 months.

Main duties of the job

This post is designed to offer experience in the full range of coronary intervention for a candidate near completion of training. Exposure to the full range of elective, urgent and emergency procedures full time for 12 months will serve to perfect techniques and decision making in coronary intervention, intravascular ultrasound, OCT, rotational and orbital atherectomy, bifurcation, LMS and CTO PCI.

During this dedicated interventional fellow post, the duties are care of the patients in or coming to the cardiac catheter suite. Diagnostic and invasive procedures under consultant supervision will include 8 cardiac catheter lab sessions, 1 outpatient clinic and a dedicated administration and research session. The Trust works closely with 3 surgical centres, and the post holder will also prepare cases for and support weekly multi-disciplinary meetings and monthly PCI M&M and case review sessions.

Further opportunities can be available for cardiac imaging experience.

The post also offers the opportunity for involvement and responsibility for recruitment to trials. The department are actively involved in interventional cardiology trials run by four Cardiology Research Nurses. The post holder will be expected to support the recruitment to current trials and have an interest in undertaking clinical research.

Job description Job responsibilities

This job description, together with the Capabilities Framework, will be reviewed annually and agreed with the Clinical Director and Divisional Director, on behalf of the Chief Medical Officer, to ensure that it continually reflects the areas of work, clinical responsibility of the post and purchaser requirements.

A suitably experienced post-holder will be expected to:

provide a service to patients of the Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, General Practitioners and to attend multi-disciplinary meetings. The successful candidate will be expected to work within multi-disciplinary team in providing high quality clinical care. It is anticipated work will be undertaken on three sites and closer to the patient's home. The Trust is seeking to extend services to GP surgeries/health centres etc and rotas may be revised in due course.

be responsible for the continuing care and treatment of patients in their charge and personal performance of clinical duties.

provide support to the A&E department and acute medicine to ensure timely appropriate care and patient flow through the hospital.

attend Consultant ward rounds and triage ward referrals.

prepare patients for planned treatment and procedures, including post-operative care as required.

provide consultation and advisory service to clinical colleagues in the Trust and Primary Care, including discharge summaries.

attend multi-disciplinary meetings where requested, which may be cross county and cross site.

collaborate with colleagues to deliver a high quality, timely service and to work towards meeting the Trust's and departmental objectives.

provide professional supervision, training and management of junior medical staff, carrying out teaching, assessment and accreditation duties as required and contributing to postgraduate and CPD activity locally and nationally as appropriate.

participate in the middle grade on call rota to ensure that both emergency and urgent services are provided out of normal hours, to be shared equally with colleagues in post.

if undertaking non-resident on-call duties, attend the hospital site to review patients when clinically necessary. You must be prepared to attend willingly whenever requested to do so by a member of their medical and nursing team.

participate in clinical audit as part of quality improvement activity under local arrangements.

commit to taking part in annual appraisal process which will be undertaken by a trust approved appraiser.

be responsible for compliance with personal continuing professional development requirements with the support of the Trust. It is mandatory for all Specialists to keep up to date with evidence based practice.

be responsible for maintaining awareness of & acting in accordance with professional guidelines such as Duties of a Doctor, Good Medical Practice, & the GMC Performance Procedures.

You will join the middle grade rota within the clinical department which will include participating in the on-call shift pattern to provide 24/7 services.You will be provided opportunities to join weekly specialist out-patient clinics and assist the Consultant or registrars with relevant procedures with a view to becoming an independent operator, maintaining a training portfolio (and logbook of procedures where applicable).

Whilst these posts are not training posts, they are structured to provide a portfolio-based Postgraduate Training Programme similar to the national training programme model. The Trust is committed to providing the medical training content.

The successful candidates will be welcomed to join the weekly teaching sessions and Grand Rounds/Journal Clubs, and participate in audit projects (at least one audit every 6 months). In-house training will be provided for PACES/membership of royal colleges examinations, and study leave will be available to help candidates prepare for the examinations. At the end of the post a Certificate of Postgraduate Training will be available.

Qualifications Essential

MBBS or equivalent MRCP (full) ALS provider Eligible for full GMC registration with Licence to Practise at the time of appointment

Desirable

Completion of specialist training and entry onto GMC specialist register in Cardiology.

Other requirements Essential

An understanding of the current NHS environment, particularly in relation to reforms, initiatives and issues. Able to meet the travel requirements of the job and return to the hospital within 30 minutes when undertaking non-resident on call duties. Workplace Health Clearance by time of appointment. Access to transport and ability to travel across hospital sites.

Management and administrative experience Essential

Ability to organise and prioritise workload effectively. Ability to organise and manage outpatient priorities. Experience of audit management and conducting clinical audit.

Ability to use the evidence based and clinical audit to support decision making.

Experience Essential

At least 3 years full time or equivalent postgraduate training, at least 2 years of which will be in a Cardiology training programme and have completed it or be near completion. At least 5 years clinical experience within Cardiology. Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on range of problems both emergency and elective within specialty and sufficient experience Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients

Teaching experience Essential

Ability to organise and deliver teaching across the whole undergraduate curriculum. Ability to teach clinical skills to medical, nursing staff and other disciplines. Experience of teaching clinical skills to undergraduates and postgraduates. Knowledge of audit principles and evidence of participation and completion of audit projects.

Desirable

Critical appraisal skills. Ability to supervise postgraduate research
