About this role

Title: Substitute Teacher Reports To: Principal Employment Status: Substitute - As-needed basis FLSA Status: Non-exempt

Position Summary: Provides classroom instruction and supervision in the temporary absence of the regular teacher. The substitute follows available lesson plans, maintains a safe and supportive learning environment, supervises students and assigned activities, communicates relevant information to school personnel, and performs other duties associated with the assigned position in accordance with district policies and procedures. Essential Functions:

• Review and follow the regular teacher's lesson plans, instructional materials, classroom procedures, and student-support information to the extent possible.

• Provide instruction and learning activities appropriate to the assigned grade level, subject area, and students' abilities.

• Maintain a safe, orderly, inclusive, and supportive classroom environment with clear expectations and positive behavior-support strategies.

• Supervise students in the classroom and during assigned duties, including arrival, dismissal, recess, cafeteria, hallway, transportation, field trips, and emergency drills, as applicable.

• Follow building schedules, procedures, emergency plans, and directions provided by the principal or designated school personnel.

• Report student accidents, illnesses, safety concerns, behavioral incidents, and other significant events promptly to the principal's office or designated administrator.

• Become familiar with building emergency procedures, including fire, severe-weather, lockdown, evacuation, and other applicable response procedures.

• Report to the main office at the beginning and end of each assignment, complete required sign-in and payroll documentation, and obtain or return identification materials as directed.

• Maintain accurate records and complete assignment-specific documentation in accordance with district and building procedures.

• Leave the regular teacher a clear summary of instruction provided, student participation, significant events, unfinished work, and other relevant information.

• Return instructional materials and equipment to their proper locations and leave the classroom or assigned work area clean, orderly, and secure.

• Communicate professionally and appropriately with students, staff, administrators, families, and visitors while maintaining student confidentiality.

• Work cooperatively with teachers, administrators, support staff, and other school personnel.

• Use sound judgment, tact, professionalism, and discretion when responding to student, family, and school-related concerns.

• Serve as a positive role model by demonstrating ethical conduct, responsibility, respect, and professionalism.

Other Duties and Responsibilities:

• Administer assessments only when authorized and in accordance with district policies, testing procedures, and directions provided by the building administrator or assigned teacher.

• Maintain a professional appearance consistent with district policy and the responsibilities of the assignment.

• Follow all district safety, health, security, emergency, and student-supervision procedures.

• Perform other related duties as assigned by the Principal, Superintendent, or their designee.

Qualifications:

• Appropriate Ohio certificate/license.

• Ability to meet all applicable state, district, and position-specific employment requirements.

• Alternative to the above qualifications as the Superintendent and/or Board of Education may find appropriate.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Knowledge of child and adolescent development and age-appropriate instructional, classroom-management, and student-support practices.

• Ability to follow lesson plans and provide instruction appropriate to the assigned grade level, subject area, curriculum, and student needs.

• Ability to establish and maintain a safe, respectful, inclusive, and productive learning environment.

• Ability to supervise students effectively and respond appropriately to behavioral, safety, health, and emergency situations.

• Ability to communicate clearly, professionally, and respectfully, both orally and in writing.

• Effective active-listening, observation, organization, decision-making, and problem-solving skills.

• Ability to work cooperatively with teachers, administrators, support personnel, students, families, and the public.

• Ability to learn and use district-approved computers, student-information systems, learning platforms, communication tools, and other educational technology.

• Ability to maintain confidentiality, exercise sound judgment, and follow district policies and procedures.

Equipment Operated:

• Computers, laptops, tablets, interactive displays, printers, scanners, copiers, telephones.

• Other district-approved instructional, office, and student-support equipment.

Working Conditions:

• Potential exposure to blood, bodily fluids, tissues, communicable illnesses, and other materials encountered in a school environment; appropriate safety procedures and protective equipment must be used as required.

• Frequent interaction with students who may exhibit a wide range of academic, behavioral, communication, sensory, or physical needs.

• Occasional interaction with parents, guardians, staff, or community members who may be upset, distressed, or confrontational.

• Regular use of vision, hearing, speech, and manual dexterity to provide instruction, monitor student needs, communicate, operate technology, and complete records.

• Regular periods of sitting, standing, walking, reaching, bending, stooping, crouching, kneeling, and moving throughout the classroom or school building.

• Occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling of supplies, instructional materials, adaptive equipment, or other items weighing up to 25 pounds.

• Ability to attend IEP meetings, professional-development activities, conferences, or other education-related events outside the regular school day when required by the district and scheduled under reasonable terms.

Employment Information:

• Employment Status: Substitute teacher; as-needed assignment basis.

• Salary: In accordance with the current district-approved substitute salary schedule.

• Employment Requirements: Must hold the required Ohio credential for the assignment, satisfactorily complete the required criminal background check, and meet all applicable state and district employment requirements.
