Job SummaryThe Transportation Assistant schedules and certifies payments for ambulance transport of eligible Veterans to and from medical appointments and hospital admissions/discharges as part of the Beneficiary Travel program. The location of this position is at the Temple campus within the special Mode Transportation Section within Health Administration Service.

QualificationsTo qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 09/08/2026. You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below: Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-04 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of Specialized experience includes but not limited to: preparing daily reports itemizing all control point activities for each day; following strict security measures when accessing or exiting computer software; moving back and forth successfully between various computer software programs; and customer service. Determine travel eligibility, computes mileage/common carriers, and prepares electronic voucher. Maintaining computer records for travel transactions. OR, Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have successfully completed 4 years above high school in any field for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite. This education was obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university. If you are qualifying on education. (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED). OR, Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have an combination of specialized experience and education in excess of 60 semester hours (2 years) is creditable. Major DutiesMajor duties assigned but not limited to: Schedules all types of Special Mode Transportation (wheelchair van, BLS, ALS, Critical Care/Specialty care, and Air Medevac). Uses VetRide program to schedule all SMT lifts and certifies invoices for payment. Contacts approval official to authorize obligations and any requests for additions, deductions, and/or movement of funds. Determines travel eligibility Looks up Veteran's home address in VistA and calculates the mileage to and destination address to enter in VetRide for 3rd party vendors to transport Veterans. Moves back and forth successfully between various computer software programs to accomplish duties in a timely manner uses two monitor screens at the same time. Uses extreme tact and respect in communicating with applicants who are not eligible for Beneficiary Travel benefits. Functions under the constant pressure of a large volume of claimants and a variety of personalities. Shows proficiency in the use of VetRide, CPRS, VISTA, HSRM, Outlook, and accessing pertinent regulations related to Special Mode Transportation. Certifies ambulance payments in VetRide and eCAMS. Provides on-the-job training to new employees. Follows strict security measures when accessing or exiting all VA computer systems and programs. Serves as back up for processing beneficiary travel reimbursement payments in the Beneficiary Travel Self Service System.
