QualificationsApplicants will be rated in accordance with the Office of Personnel Management Qualification Standard for Trades and Labor Occupations. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties at the level for which you are applying. Emphasis is placed on how you gained the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time, and the required ability or potential to perform the job. Applicants who do not meet the screen-out element (SOE) will be eliminated from further competition. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Physical Effort: The wood worker uses power and manual tools while performing repetitive, tiring work for long periods of time. Frequent standing, bending, stooping, reaching, and arm movement is required. The incumbent sometimes works in cramped or awkward positions. The work requires continuous lifting, carrying, and using tools and materials that weigh up to 60 pounds. Sometimes heavier weights are lifted and moved with the assistance of others or lifting devices such as floor hoists or cranes. Working Conditions: Work is normally performed in a shop or other enclosed areas which may be drafty, damp, or overheated. Sometimes employees work outside in fair weather, and occasionally in bad weather. The incumbent is frequently exposed to sawdust, as well as other nose and lung irritations. Frequent exposure to loud noises from power saws, hammers, etc. Subject to possible cuts from flying wooden particles, nails, fasteners, etc. May be required to wear protective eyeglasses, ear devices, or gloves.
Major DutiesPasses instructions on to other workers.Ensures that needed tools and material are available.Sees that all workers have enough work and are fully utilized.Checks work in progress and completed work for compliance.Answer workers questions regarding procedures, policies, written instructions and directions.Provides information to supervisor on status and progress of work.Constructs, and repairs a variety of supply, shipping, and storage containers and similar items.Determines size and shape of crates, boxes and skids.Selects proper size lumber need to construct various type of staying devices for block and bracing purposes.Operates cut-off, rip and band saws, drills, joiners, chain saws, pneumatic nailing guns, impact wrenches, jacks, come-alongs, and other fastening devices.Researches proper Packaging, Packing, Preservation and Marking (PPPM) requirements for various stock and provides the results along with proper supplies to employees to remediate the discrepant stock.Operates materials handling equipment which includes, but is not limited to, fork lifts with a lift capability of lifting loads weighing up to 10,000 pounds, warehouse tractors, stock selectors, etc., to move, transfer and/or transport material.
