Digital Technology and Media - - Position Overview- We are seeking a versatile Systems Administrator with hands-on expertise in Linux infrastructure, virtualization, and legacy open-source telephony, specifically Asterisk 1.4. In this dual-capacity role, you will maintain and optimize internal server infrastructure while serving as a core operational and technical resource for our residential VoIP telephony ecosystem. You will work closely with our primary Systems Administrator and technical team to manage virtual machines, automate backups, troubleshoot low-level SIP/RTP telephony issues, and maintain mission-critical dialplans and call routing.Key Responsibilities- Server Maintenance: Administer, patch, and monitor Linux (Debian, CentOS/RHEL, Ubuntu) and Windows server environments.- Automation: Develop shell scripts (Bash, Python) to automate routine maintenance, log parsing, and administrative tasks.? Asterisk 1.4 & Telephony Specialization:- Legacy Asterisk Management: Maintain, debug, and configure legacy Asterisk 1.4 PBX environments, including flat-file configuration structures (extensions.conf, sip.conf, iax.conf, voicemail.conf, etc.).- Endpoint Provisioning: Provision, configure, and support residential Analog Telephone Adapters (ATAs like Grandstream, Cisco/Linksys SPA) and SIP endpoints.Required Qualifications & Technical Skills- 3+ years of professional systems administration experience in enterprise or service-provider Linux environments.- Demonstrated hands-on experience managing and troubleshooting Asterisk (specifically legacy Asterisk 1.4 or 1.8 flat-file configurations without reliance on modern GUIs like FreePBX).- Strong understanding of telephony protocols: SIP, RTP, RTCP, SDP, IAX2, along with NAT traversal techniques (STUN, TURN, ICE, externip/localnet parameters).- Proficiency in network packet inspection tools (Wireshark, tcpdump, sngrep) for VoIP signaling and media stream diagnostics.- Solid experience with hypervisors (VMware ESXi, Proxmox VE, or KVM) and network services (DNS, DHCP, NTP, SSH, SSL/TLS certificates).- Competence in relational databases (MySQL, MariaDB) for Asterisk CDR and application data queries.- Strong scripting skills (Bash, Python, or PHP/Perl for AGI scripts).- Strong problem-solving ability, documentation hygiene, and ability to handle on-call operational escalations.Asset / Nice-to-Have Qualifications- Experience with newer Asterisk versions (16/18/20) and modern PJSIP architecture.- Familiarity with Kamailio, OpenSIPS, or Session Border Controllers (SBCs).- Knowledge of networking fundamentals: VLANs, QoS (DSCP/CoS prioritization), and firewall filtering.- Relevant technical certifications (LFCS/RHCSA, dcap - Digium Certified Asterisk Professional, or CCNA).
