About this role

As an *HVAC Controls Designer*, you are a key member of our engineering team, reporting directly to the Construction Manager. You will play a critical role in ensuring the seamless integration, design, and functionality of control systems across various projects.

Leveraging your strong technical expertise, problem-solving skills, and deep understanding of control systems design principles, you will be instrumental in building solutions that drive automation and enhance operational efficiency. Your attention to detail, commitment to quality, and technical precision will directly contribute to the success and execution of our engineering operations.

*Key Responsibilities*

*Control System Design & Development*

* Design, develop, and configure control systems for industrial and commercial automation projects, ensuring optimal performance. * Collaborate with project teams to review system requirements, specifications, and project needs to select appropriate hardware and software components. * Develop control system architecture, create detailed design documentation, and select communication protocols. * Partner with electrical, mechanical, and software engineers to integrate control systems into overall project designs.

*Documentation & Technical Support*

* Prepare detailed technical documentation, including sequence of operations, controls submittals, user manuals, and test procedures. * Provide technical support and guidance to project teams throughout the project lifecycle. * Assist in creating as-built documentation and maintain accurate records of control system configurations and modifications (with designs reviewed by the Project Manager). * Actively participate in the turnover of completed designs to the installation team.

*Continuous Improvement & Innovation*

* Stay up-to-date with the latest control systems technologies, industry trends, and standards. * Continuously evaluate and recommend improvements to control system designs, processes, and engineering methodologies. * Collaborate with cross-functional teams to drive innovation and identify opportunities for optimization and efficiency gains.

*Compliance & Safety*

* Ensure control system designs comply with relevant industry standards, regulations, and safety guidelines. * Conduct risk and compliance assessments with project teams and implement necessary safety measures. * Participate in design reviews and quality assurance activities to identify and resolve potential issues or non-conformities.

*Requirements*

* *Education:* Diploma in Engineering Technology (Mechanical with a Building Systems focus, Instrumentation & Control, or Electrical Engineering Technology). * *Trade Alternative:* Red Seal Electrician or Refrigeration Technician certification combined with verified Direct Digital Control (DDC) field experience. * *Licensing & Travel:* Valid BC Class 5 Driver's License and a clean driving record for travel to job sites, design turnovers, and commissioning walk-throughs.

*Qualifications & Technical Skills*

* *Software:* Hands-on proficiency with Automated Logic Corporation (ALC) software and the WebCTRL platform is considered a strong asset. * *System Operations:* Proven ability to author, interpret, and test detailed *Sequence of Operations (SOO)* logic for HVAC equipment (including AHUs, chillers, boilers, and VAV systems). * *Protocols:* Practical experience configuring and troubleshooting low-voltage communication buses and field protocols (BACnet, Modbus, LonWorks). * *Standards & Codes:* Sound working knowledge of regional building and electrical standards, including Technical Safety BC low-voltage requirements (Class 2 circuits) and ASHRAE 90.1 energy efficiency guidelines.
