About this role
Are you an attorney with a passion for insurance coverage and complex litigation? Join Kinsale Insurance, a leading excess and surplus (E&S) lines carrier headquartered in Richmond, VA. We're known for our high-quality, high-touch approach and innovative, personalized solutions that help clients manage complex risks — and we bring that same standard of excellence to our legal team.
About the Role
As a Coverage Attorney at Kinsale, you'll take ownership of all aspects of the coverage litigation process — from analyzing complex coverage issues to working alongside senior management on claims handling best practices. You'll collaborate closely with outside counsel, engage in mediations and trials, and serve as a key advisor as the legal landscape evolves. This is a high-impact role for a sharp, detail-oriented attorney who thrives in a fast-paced, analytically driven environment.
What You'll Do
• Overseeing all aspects of the coverage litigation process, including analyzing coverage issues and determining exposure across all levels of litigation.
• Evaluating claims handling and underwriting practices to identify risk and support sound coverage positions.
• Working closely with outside counsel to draft pleadings and motions consistent with Kinsale's coverage positions and proprietary policy forms.
• Reviewing and responding to subpoenas and complaints filed with state insurance departments.
• Participating in mediations, arbitrations, and trials, with travel as needed.
• Preparing comprehensive coverage position papers that account for venue and claims handling practices.
• Communicating effectively with agents, brokers, and attorneys — both orally and in writing.
• Partnering with senior management to identify best practices and advise on responses to changes in the legal environment.
What You Bring
• J.D. degree and a four-year college degree.
• Active admission to practice law in at least one state.
• Superior writing skills, with demonstrated ability to draft claim correspondence, coverage positions, and litigation pleadings.
• Strong analytical ability to interpret state laws, regulations, and case law related to insurance coverage and claims handling.
• Background in litigation, preferably involving insurance claims and coverage matters.
• Experience in the commercial property and casualty insurance industry, preferably in the excess and surplus lines market.
• Detail-oriented with strong interpersonal skills, organizational ability, and a collaborative mindset.
