Field Engineer (Berwick, PA)Job DescriptionThe Field Engineer performs field and laboratory testing, observation, and inspection of construction materials such as soils, aggregates, concrete, asphalt, steel, and rebar. This role involves traveling to project sites across Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, and surrounding areas, collecting and transporting samples to the laboratory, and preparing clear, accurate written and digital reports for project leadership. The position offers progressive training, increasing responsibility, and the opportunity to grow within a collaborative consulting engineering environment.Responsibilities
• Perform field and laboratory testing, observation, and inspection of construction materials including soils, aggregates, concrete, asphalt, steel, rebar, structural masonry, spray-applied fireproofing, and roofing. • Collect soil, concrete, asphalt, rebar, and other material samples from construction job sites and ensure all samples are properly labeled and documented. • Transport material samples with associated identifying documentation to the laboratory for further testing and analysis. • Tabulate, prepare, and submit data and observations in the form of written and digital reports on a daily basis for transmittal to the Project Manager. • Perform inspections on reinforced concrete, structural masonry, spray-applied fireproofing, roofing, and other structural components as required by project specifications. • Communicate regularly with the Project Manager, engineering technicians, client representatives, contractor representatives, and other stakeholders regarding construction site conditions, project requirements, and testing, observation, and inspection results. • Provide clear documentation of findings and results, and discuss the accuracy of data with the Project Manager prior to report submittal. • Submit all documentation and communicate test results and observations as directed by the Project Manager. • Assist, under close supervision of higher-level technicians or staff professionals, with basic testing and observation tasks while progressing into roles with increased training and responsibility. • Maintain and clean equipment, vehicles, and work areas to ensure they are in good working order and ready for daily use. • Maintain assigned equipment, including specialized testing tools such as nuclear density gauges, and ensure they are operated safely and correctly. • Adhere to strict safety standards, follow all safety rules and practices, and comply with safety requirements on every project. • Perform pre-task planning prior to executing work to identify hazards, required controls, and necessary equipment. • Report any safety issues or concerns promptly to management and contribute to a culture of safety on all job sites. • Be responsible for maintaining quality standards on all projects by following established procedures and industry best practices. • Assist with scheduling and dispatching technicians to project sites as needed to support project execution and timelines. • Check in with the Project Manager before the end of each shift to provide a status update on work performed, test results, and any issues encountered. • Travel regularly to construction sites in South Jersey, the Philadelphia area, Central Pennsylvania (including State College), and parts of New York to perform field work and testing. • Participate in ongoing safety training and professional development opportunities offered by the company to advance skills and knowledge. • Contribute to a collaborative environment where employees share responsibility for client service, project quality, and continuous improvement. Essential Skills
• Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or Geology. • Ability and willingness to travel regularly to project sites in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, and surrounding areas, including Berwick, State College, and the Philadelphia region. • Experience or coursework related to geotechnical engineering, construction materials, or laboratory testing. • Ability to perform soil sampling and testing in field and laboratory environments. • Ability to conduct concrete testing and inspection, including reinforced concrete and structural masonry. • Familiarity with testing construction materials such as aggregates, asphalt, steel, and rebar. • Ability to safely operate and maintain testing equipment, including nuclear density gauges and other field instruments. • Strong observational skills to accurately document site conditions, test procedures, and results. • Ability to prepare, tabulate, and submit clear written and digital reports on a daily basis. • Effective communication skills to interact with Project Managers, technicians, client representatives, and contractors. • Commitment to following strict safety standards, safety rules, and pre-task planning procedures on all projects. • Capability to work independently in the field while maintaining regular communication with the Project Manager. • Strong attention to detail and dedication to maintaining high quality standards on all projects. Additional Skills & Qualifications
• Experience with geotechnical and laboratory testing of soils, aggregates, concrete, asphalt, and steel. • Knowledge of sediment sampling and testing methods. • Familiarity with material testing procedures and aggregate testing standards. • Exposure to engineering and construction environments, particularly within the A/E/C industry. • ACI inspector experience or ACI-related training and certifications are beneficial. • Interest in professional development through company-paid training for industry certifications and hands-on lab and field experience. • Motivation to grow into roles with progressively increased responsibility and training. • Ability to support scheduling and dispatch of technicians to project sites when needed. • Strong organizational skills to manage multiple projects, samples, and reports efficiently. • Willingness to participate in company programs that support engineering education, internships, and STEAM-related initiatives. Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract to Hire position based out of Moorestown, NJ. Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $23.00 - $26.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
