Hazardous Waste Technician, Walt Disney World
Job Description: The primary responsibility of this position is to support the handling, transport, consolidation and shipment of regulated waste from on-site WDW areas and off-site properties to ensure compliance with all state and federal RCRA regulations. The position requires a working knowledge of hazardous waste (RCRA), regulated waste (e.g. CERCLA, EPCRA), DOT hazardous materials and oil spill prevention program (SPCC) regulations. The position will be active in the field the majority of the work day picking up drums and buckets of regulated waste from locations and loading and unloading trucks via forklift, boom and by hand.

Basic Qualifications: • Working knowledge of Hazardous Waste (RCRA) regulations • Class B CDL with Air Brakes and HAZMAT endorsements • Fork lift trained • Able to pass DOT drug testing, DOT physical, respirator fit test • Able to lift heavy objects, move 55-gallon drums and work outdoors
Required Education: • High School diploma or GED equivalent
Preferred Qualifications: • Working knowledge of industrial chemistry (Safety Data Sheet interpretation) • Working knowledge of Asbestos Landfill/Solid Waste regulations
Responsibilities: • Pickup hazardous and other regulated wastes (in various sizes, including 55-gallon drums) generated at the Walt Disney World Resort and transport to the main accumulation yard. This includes the daily operation of a boom truck, pallet jack, fork lift and drum dollies • Pickup regulated wastes from off-site locations and transport to the main accumulation area • Perform inspections of accumulation areas for compliance issues (labeling, container condition, accumulation dates, etc.) and communicate any deficiencies to EA representatives and leadership • Consolidate wastes to minimize number of containers requiring disposal. Includes segregation of waste streams by type and compatibility, compaction of solids, puncturing universal waste aerosol cans and combining partial drums/containers • Perform elementary neutralization of D002 characteristic wastes (corrosives) • Identify unknown waste types by field tests or research of product SDS • Collect various environmental or waste samples for laboratory analysis • Characterize used oil for total halogens using a halogen leak detector calibrated to 1000 ppm methylene chloride in oil • Prepare shipments of hazardous wastes, universal wastes, chemical wastes and biomedical wastes for disposal. Includes proper packaging, labeling, placarding and preparing manifests in accordance with United States Department of Transportation regulations. • Identify and develop waste profiles for disposal facility acceptance • Lab pack hazardous chemicals for off-site disposal. Includes segregation of wastes by compatibility and hazard classification, packaging and profile preparation • Participate in the WDW Chemical Emergency Response Team. Includes annual refresher training, completing the required physical, wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (including respirator) and cleaning up spilled chemicals • Coordinate asbestos disposal at the WDW landfill with abatement contractors • Assist demolition contractors, construction and other vendors with the disposal of hazardous substances
