About this role

Job summary

Applications are invited for the role of Deputy Postgraduate Dean (Foundation Training) within NHS England South West. The role of Deputy Postgraduate Dean will provide local and regional leadership for the delivery of high-quality Foundation Training, working collaboratively across specialties and professions to ensure excellent educational outcomes. The role supports the Regional Postgraduate Dean in delivering corporate, statutory and non-statutory functions and is firmly focused on improving patient and learner safety and experience.

The post holder will have a specific portfolio responsibility for Foundation Training across the South West region, ensuring the quality, development and effective management of Foundation Programmes and supporting educational providers to deliver high-quality training environments.

The appointment will be made on the basis of a part-time secondment to NHS England, alongside existing employment with an NHS Trust within the South West geographical footprint.

Main duties of the job

Key areas of responsibility will include:

Direct management and support of the Heads of School Direct management of resident doctors in training with professional standards, complex training and performance issues and support of the Heads of Schools in managing resident doctors in training experiencing difficulties Engagement with national workstreams including medical education reform programmes Leading on local delivery of national programmes The ideal candidate will be an experienced clinician with a thorough understanding of education and training across the region. They will also have strong leadership and communication skills and be able to work effectively as a member of a multi-professional team.

Person Specification

Qualifications and Training Essential

Registered Medical or Dental Practitioner with a current license to practise. Attendance at courses aimed to support educational development

Desirable

Higher educational qualification such as a postgraduate certificate, diploma or Master's in education.

Experience and Knowledge Essential

Previous or current appointment as a leader in healthcare education. Experience as a senior educator working in the field of Postgraduate Medical and Dental Education and Training. Knowledge of NHS operating model/provision/commissioning of training.

Skills and Abilities Essential

Proven track record of influencing and motivating others in leading change. Ability to make decisions autonomously when required on difficult and complex issues. Highly effective communicator
