About Water Resources Group

WRG is a family of self-performing civil construction companies, including Rice Lake and Rice Lake West. We build water and wastewater treatment infrastructure, heavy civil, and commercial projects throughout the Upper Mid-West and Mountain West regions — and we're known for giving our people real responsibility, early.

Primary Function

Combo Welders perform both welding and pipefitting/installation duties — fitting, fabricating, installing, and welding piping systems and structural components for water and wastewater treatment plant construction projects — ensuring all installations and welds meet project specifications, applicable codes, and safety standards.

Key Responsibilities

• Lay out, fit, fabricate, and install piping systems and structural components according to blueprints, isometric drawings, and specifications

• Perform welding using SMAW (stick), GTAW (TIG), and/or GMAW/FCAW processes to join pipe and structural steel

• Cut, thread, groove, and prepare pipe and fittings prior to welding or installation

• Install valves, pumps, meters, and other piping system components

• Perform pressure testing and leak checks on installed piping systems

• Read and interpret blueprints, P&IDs, isometric drawings, weld symbols, and welding procedure specifications (WPS)

• Inspect completed welds and installations for defects, and perform repairs as needed

• Rig and move materials and equipment safely as needed

• Complete and pass welding certification tests as required by project or code (e.g., ASME, AWS)

• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area in compliance with OSHA and company safety standards

Educational Background

High school diploma or equivalent required. Completion of a welding and/or pipefitting apprenticeship program preferred.

Work Experience

Minimum 3–5 years of combined pipefitting/installation and welding experience required. Current welding certifications (e.g., 6G pipe) strongly preferred. Experience with water or wastewater treatment plant construction is a plus, but not required.

Practical Knowledge

• Pipe fabrication, threading, grooving, and installation techniques

• Multiple welding processes: SMAW, GTAW, GMAW/FCAW

• Reading blueprints, P&IDs, isometric drawings, weld symbols, and welding procedure specifications (WPS)

• Pressure testing and leak detection methods

• Safety protocols for welding, pipefitting, rigging, and confined space work
