Job Title: Energy MarshalJob DescriptionThe Energy Marshal leads all aspects of hazardous energy control on a construction site, with a strong focus on data center projects. This role develops and enforces site-specific energy isolation procedures, oversees Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) activities, supports energization and commissioning, and ensures full compliance with applicable safety standards. The Energy Marshal serves as the primary authority on energized work, providing oversight, training, and coordination to protect personnel, equipment, and systems throughout the project lifecycle. Responsibilities • Develop, implement, and enforce site-specific Energy Isolation Procedures (EIP) tailored to project requirements. • Oversee all Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) activities for electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and other stored energy systems. • Review and approve energy isolation permits and switching procedures before work begins. • Verify proper identification, isolation, and testing of all energy sources prior to the start of work. • Maintain energy isolation logs, tracking systems, and related documentation to ensure accurate and current records. • Coordinate energization schedules with construction, commissioning, and owner teams to align activities and minimize risk. • Participate in pre-energization planning meetings to review scope, risks, and control measures. • Review Methods of Procedure (MOPs), commissioning scripts, and switching plans for accuracy, safety, and compliance. • Monitor energization, startup, and commissioning activities to ensure adherence to approved procedures and safety standards. • Maintain an up-to-date status of all energized systems and communicate changes to relevant stakeholders. • Conduct field audits and inspections of energized work activities to verify compliance with procedures and regulations. • Ensure compliance with OSHA regulations, NFPA 70E, NEC requirements, and client safety standards for all energized work. • Verify that only qualified personnel perform work on energized systems and enforce qualification requirements. • Stop work immediately when unsafe conditions, procedural violations, or hazardous energy conflicts are observed. • Assist in incident investigations related to energized work and support the development of corrective actions. • Identify hazardous energy risks and develop appropriate mitigation measures for construction activities. • Review Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs) and Activity Hazard Analyses (AHAs) related to energized work to ensure adequate controls. • Ensure appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements are established, communicated, and enforced. • Coordinate interface management between multiple trade contractors to prevent hazardous energy conflicts and overlap. • Maintain accurate records of energized systems, energy control boundaries, LOTO activities, energization permits, isolation plans, and incident and audit reports. • Update one-line diagrams and energization status reports to reflect current field conditions. • Provide daily and weekly reporting on energy control and energization activities to project leadership. • Conduct Energy Marshal orientations for project personnel to explain roles, responsibilities, and procedures. • Provide ongoing training on LOTO requirements, safe energy control procedures, and changes to energy isolation plans. • Lead daily coordination meetings focused on energization activities, ensuring clear communication among all stakeholders. • Serve as the primary point of contact for hazardous energy questions and energy control planning on the construction site. Essential Skills • At least 10 years of Energy Marshal experience within construction environments. • Data center construction experience, including exposure to complex critical power and cooling systems. • In-depth knowledge of NFPA 70E standards and demonstrated ability to apply them in the field. • Relevant certification related to NFPA 70E and electrical safety in the workplace. • Proven experience writing and implementing energy control plans and procedures. • Ability to read, interpret, and update one-line diagrams for electrical systems. • Extensive hands-on experience with Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) processes for electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and stored energy systems. • Strong understanding of OSHA regulations and NEC requirements related to energized work. • Demonstrated ability to lead, train, and influence field personnel regarding safe energy control practices. • Strong documentation and reporting skills, including maintaining logs, permits, and status reports. Additional Skills & Qualifications • Experience coordinating energization and commissioning activities in complex construction projects. • Background in conducting field audits, inspections, and incident investigations related to energized work. • Ability to develop and review Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs) and Activity Hazard Analyses (AHAs) for hazardous energy tasks. • Strong communication skills to lead meetings, deliver orientations, and serve as the primary point of contact for energy control topics. • Proven ability to coordinate multiple trade contractors and manage interfaces to prevent hazardous energy conflicts. Work EnvironmentThis role is based on an active construction site, with a strong focus on data center projects and critical infrastructure systems. The Energy Marshal works primarily in the field, closely observing energized work, conducting audits, and interacting with construction and commissioning teams. The environment includes exposure to electrical rooms, mechanical spaces, and areas with complex power and cooling systems. Work hours follow typical construction schedules, with the need to be present during key energization, startup, and commissioning activities. The position requires adherence to site safety rules, use of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), and compliance with all construction site protocols. Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract to Hire position based out of Saint George, SC. Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $45.00 - $45.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
