Monitoring and Evaluation Advisor
Project Description: Apply your passion for monitoring and evaluation (M&E) to strengthen Botswana’s public health systems and help drive meaningful, data‑informed change.
Botswana has made major gains in its HIV response, surpassing the UNAIDS 95‑95‑95 targets, reducing mother‑to‑child transmission, and expanding treatment coverage and viral suppression. However, the country’s HIV strategic information system still faces significant challenges that limit data‑driven decision‑making, including fragmented digital platforms, outdated paper‑based tools, under‑resourced M&E units, and inconsistent data sharing across partners. The newly developed HIV/AIDS database has not been fully operationalized. Community‑level data collection also remains insufficient, limiting effective monitoring and evidence‑based programming.
As a Monitoring and Evaluation Advisor, you will train healthcare workers in supply chain management to improve accountability, strengthen pandemic preparedness, and reinforce national supply chains and laboratory systems. Your supportive role includes modernizing service delivery by leveraging AI, improving data use through stronger M&E systems, and advancing interoperable digital platforms. Through operations research, you will help generate evidence that guides national and district‑level planning with a focus on key populations and service quality.
Required Skills: Bachelor's degree in information and communications technology (ICT), computer science, computer programming, health informatics, or mathematics. AND Two or more years of experience with quantitative and qualitative analysis, using computer applications and statistical software packages.
Living Conditions: During training, Volunteers will have a private room within a host family’s house. After training, Volunteers will move to their assigned sites in one of the country’s 10 districts and can expect either a private room or a small, private house on the host family’s compound. The Volunteer should be prepared for limited or unreliable electricity and water in these rural areas. Public transportation via a mini-bus, bus, or taxi will allow the Volunteer to travel to larger towns if needed.
Activities: Train health care workers on supply chain management for health commodities and services, improving accountability and strengthening pandemic preparedness.
Strengthen supply chains, laboratory systems, and public-private partnerships.
Optimize delivery models by leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) and digital platforms.
Improve data use through digital platforms, robust M&E systems, and expanded laboratory capacity.
Promote interoperable, harmonized data systems to support joint planning, resource allocation, and program monitoring.
Strengthen evidence generation through operations research to inform national and district-level planning, with a focus on key populations and service quality.
You may also work on additional projects that meet the community’s interests and priorities, such as tutoring students in English and math, or facilitating a reading club at a nearby school.
Training: After a two-week orientation on topics such as health and safety, you will move to a semi-urban or rural community where you will collaborate with clinics, nonprofits, primary health care offices, and youth groups to assess the needs and develop a work plan in line with their established needs.
Peace Corps/Botswana will equip you with Setswana language resources and you may work with a local tutor who can help you build basic language skills to connect with the community. You will also receive language resources and learn Ikalanga, Simbukushu, or Sekgalagari based on your site placement.
