Job summary

37.5 hours per week

(6am-2pm, 2pm-10pm, 10pm-6am)

Providing a site assistant service for Mount Gould Hospital. Maintaining a high standard of cleanliness, tidiness and general appearance within all LSW premises. Carry out all cleaning duties as directed by Facilities Management Team within all LSW premises. This post operates 7 days per week including bank holidays on a rotational shift pattern. Must be able to work alone and on own initiative as well as part of a team.

The post holder must be able to drive and hold a full driving licence.

Main duties of the job

This role provides a portering service to Mount Gould Hospital. Duties will include moving and handling of heavy equipment, waste disposable, floor maintenance, internal postal delivery service and a cleaning service. You may be required to work in other locations to meet service needs. You may be required to change your shift pattern to meet service needs.

JOB PURPOSE

Providing a site assistant, courier service and cleaning service for Mount Gould Hospital, Cumberland Centre, Glenbourne Unit & other LSW premises. Maintaining a high standard of cleanliness, tidiness and general appearance within all LSW premises. Carry out all cleaning duties as directed by Facilities Services Management Team within all LSW premises.

Site Assistants are responsible for providing porter services to facilitate the movement of patients and goods around the organisation that enable all clinical and non-clinical staff to fulfil their function in a safe and effective way so far is reasonably practical.

There may be an occasional requirement for the facilitation of patient movement, via beds, trolleys and wheelchairs to x-ray and other wards.

The removal of all waste materials from Livewell wards, units & sites.

The movement of sundry items that include but not limited to medical gas, patient notes, beds, hospital equipment and office equipment which is required to be secure in order for safe transportation to minimise risk.

To receive delivery of medical gas cylinders and store securely in accordance with HTM O2-O1. Handled with care by those who have received appropriate training and understand the hazards involved.

Staff will be trained in the potential hazards and dangers of medical gas cylinders, safe handling of gas cylinders, emergency procedures and the use of fire fighting appliances.

Collect soiled linen to collection point.

Clean linen to store cupboards.

Internal postal delivery and collection services, including sending external post via Royal Mail, delivery of parcels etc.

External courier service delivering and collecting mail from all Livewell sites.

Delivery of catering from Mount Gould Hospital CPU to wards, external sites (i.e. buffets).

Support the induction of new starters.

MAIN DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

Mount Gould, Cumberland & Glenbourne Site Assistant Duties

To deliver catering supplies to all departments.

Remove all waste and safely dispose in allocated bin areas ensuring bin area is clean and tidy. Bins must be locked at all time. To safely move full bins to storage area when required and replace with empty bins. To empty and dispose of contents of external bin receptacles and replace with new bin bag daily.

To collect and deliver clean and soiled laundry bags and linen and store in correct facilities.

To store C.S.S.D. bags and laboratory specimens in appropriate area to await collection.

Report faults in equipment and the fabric of the building, record and log fault and monitor to ensure work is completed.

Assist in the moving of equipment.

Assist with moving patients to X-ray, Minor Injuries Unit, Physio Department and other services as and when required.

Deliver and connect medical gases to departments when required (as per policy).

Deliver, collect and sort all mail & parcels from departments & units and frank external post.

Collect and deliver patient medical notes directly to individual departments.

Responsible for receiving all stores & goods including stationery and distributing to all departments & units on a weekly basis or as and when delivered.

Ensure the safe delivery from Pharmacy of all medication to a person in charge in the correct department or unit.

Ensure the safe collection of all specimens by Pharmacy.

To maintain cleanliness and carry out routine checks on site assistant vehicles as per instructions from Transport Department.

Replenish all domestic store cupboards with stock for cleaning. Replenish all dispensers with paper products, soap and cleaning solutions.

To work flexibly to meet service needs.

To provide annual leave & sickness absence cover to the Site Assistant - Courier Driver at Cumberland Centre, Glenbourne, Mount Gould Hospital and Postal Worker at Mount Gould Hospital

All Site Assistant Duties:

The cleaning of:-

Corridors, stairs, floors and lift

Clinical areas

X-Ray Department

Minor Injuries Unit

Minor Operations Theatre

Toilets

Waiting Rooms

Reception Areas

Empty and clean refuse bins and cigarette stub holders

Clean spillages etc. following Infection Control guidelines

Changing curtains as and when requested

Deep cleaning of floors using floor cleaning equipment as requested, i.e. buffing machine

Deep cleaning of ceilings, light diffusers, extractor fans, ventilation grills, cooker hoods and walls

Removal of radiator covers, cleaning of radiators and refitting radiator covers

Grounds and Gardens:

Responsible for the maintenance of the grounds to include:-

Ensure all entrances are clear of leaves and litter at all times.

Grit & salt paths and steps during cold weather.

Empty outside waste receptacles.

Cleaning of all signs internal and external.

Cleaning of porches and canopies. Cleaning of PVC window frames, external window sills, main entrances and external covered ways.

Health & Safety

Responsible for locking and alarming buildings, ensuring all units are properly secured at nights and weekends. Responsible for unlocking and deactivating alarms in buildings.

Respond to emergency alarms including fire & ambulance.

To escort Funeral Directors to ward areas.

Reporting of untoward incidents.

Testing fire alarms on weekly basis at Cumberland Centre or as directed by Facilities Services Management Team.

Testing panic alarms on weekly basis.

Aid visitors to the site and adhere to Health & Safety.

Responsible for the safe keeping of all keys to units & departments. Out of hours to collect keys or codes from Mount Gould Switchboard Room.

To respond to all requests made by Night Co-ordinator on the Mount Gould site.

General

Assist any contractors who attend site.

Responsible for giving access to restricted areas or departments to all authorised personnel.

Any other duties requested by the Hotel Services Management Team.

Other Responsibilities

To attend all training sessions including mandatory training and role specific training as necessary in line with organisation policy.

Work strictly in accordance with the current Livewell Southwest policies and procedures and with due regard to the health safety and welfare of yourself and others that may be affected by your work/actions.

Ensure that tools and equipment used in the workplace are fit for purpose, used in the correct environment and well maintained.

Work will be allocated via an App and the post holder will be required to use this to book on and off work.

Post holder will be required to input into all existing administration systems and those introduced in the future.

COMMUNICATION & PATIENT INVOLVEMENT

To maintain effective communication with staff within the department and with other staff groups

To communicate with multidisciplinary staff including Matrons, Ward Managers in regards to porter tasks, medical gases, postal services, equipment & office moves.

Observe the dignity and privacy of patients and give consideration to their medical condition when planning and undertaking work.

Physical Skills

A good level of physical skill is required for the safe and effective use of hand tools, and maintenance equipment. The role requires coordination, manual dexterity and the ability to undertake a range of general maintenance tasks safely. The post holder must be able to work in confined or potentially hazardous environments and demonstrate competent driving skills when travelling between sites on a daily basis.

Take special precaution with tools and equipment in buildings designated for mental health to ensure that a patient cannot come into contact with anything that has the potential to cause harm.

Physical Effort

There is a frequent requirement to within the daily role to exert moderate physical effort when manual handling of loads including furniture, waste, medical gas cylinders.

Transporting patients across the site via wheelchair or bed where there is a requirement for to ensure there is safety for patients at all times.

Manoeuvre patient from transport, i.e. wheelchair or bed using slide sheets.

There may be an occasional exposure to emotional circumstances where there is a requirement to move patients and escort grieving relatives.

Mental Effort

Frequent concentration is required when undertaking a range of planned tasks, including basic fault identification.

Work is carried out within live healthcare environments, including clinical and mental health settings, requiring attention to safety, awareness of surroundings, and adherence to procedures.

Emotional Effort

Occasional exposure to challenging environments, including working within operational healthcare settings and mental health wards where activities may need to be adjusted or paused depending on clinical situations and patient needs.

Working Conditions

Frequent exposure to unpleasant working conditions, including soiled laundry and varying indoor and outdoor temperatures. Work may involve exposure to waste materials

Occasional exposure to more unpleasant conditions work is undertaken in a range of environments including clinical areas, requiring adherence to health and safety procedures and the use of personal protective equipment (PPE).

Person Specification

Experience Essential

Full and valid driving licence. Reasonable adjustments under the Equality Act will be taken into account for the successful applicant. Manual handling experience.

Qualifications Essential

Vocational qualification Level II or able to demonstrate the skills, knowledge and ability to work to this level.

Knowledge Essential

Knowledge of the Highway Code and Road Traffic Law. Awareness of Health & Safety & COSHH Regulations.

Able to use floor cleaning equipment

Specific skills Essential

Able to work as part of a team, approachable calm personality. Able to respond to written and verbal communication.
