About this role

Job summary

The GP with Extended Role (GPwER) in Community Dermatology will deliver high-quality, specialist dermatology care within an NHS England community-based service. The role supports the delivery of care closer to home, reducing unnecessary secondary care referrals and improving patient access in line with NHS Long Term Plan priorities. The post holder will work within agreed clinical pathways, national guidance, and local ICB commissioning arrangements.

We are seeking experienced and committed GPwER Dermatologists to participate in our community service. Undertaking sessional work you will manage your own caseload, as well as autonomous prescribing for patients in our BMJ Award 2021 shortlisted community service.

The role is contract based with a session lasting 3 hours. The number of sessions per week can vary based on clinician availability.

Main duties of the job Clinical Responsibilities

Provide specialist dermatology assessment, diagnosis, and management for patients referred from primary care under locally agreed referral criteria.

Manage a broad range of dermatological conditions, including inflammatory skin disease, benign and suspicious skin lesions, and chronic skin conditions.

Undertake dermatological procedures in line with competencies and service accreditation, which may include cryotherapy, curettage and cautery, punch and shave biopsies, and excision of low-risk skin lesions where approved.

Recognise and appropriately escalate or refer patients requiring secondary or tertiary dermatology services, including suspected skin cancers, in accordance with NHS England cancer pathways and local ICB policies.

Prescribe and monitor dermatological treatments safely and effectively in line with NICE guidance, local formularies, and shared care agreements.

Checking investigation results (commenting and filing)

Documentation & Governance: Maintain accurate and timely clinical records and adhere to governance, safety, and quality standards.

Conduct clinical practice in accordance with contractual requirements and within the parameters of Patient Firsts services plans

Work in face-to-face and telephone clinics as required

Work within changing service requirements as directed by PFSE management/service contract/ specification

The Dermatology service was shortlisted for the prestigious BMJ Dermatology Team of the Year in 2021. Our growing, consultant led, dermatology team consists of experienced GPwERs and specialist nurse prescribers. Operating at locations throughout northeast London (Newham, Tower Hamlets and Waltham Forest) on weekdays, evenings and Saturday mornings.

Clinical Governance and Quality

Maintain clinical training

Maintain mandatory training (as required by PFSE)

Participate in appraisals and supervision

Practice within the RCGP framework for GPwERs and maintain accreditation, appraisal, and re-validation requirements.

Participate in clinical audit, peer review, case discussion, and quality improvement activity as required by PFSE.

Comply with NHS England clinical governance, safeguarding, infection prevention and control, and information governance policies.

Contribute to incident reporting, learning from events, and service improvement initiatives.

Education and Professional DevelopmentMaintain ongoing continuing professional development (CPD) in dermatology in line with NHS England and RCGP expectations (inform PFSE of training awards etc).

Contribute to education and training of GPs, GP trainees, nurses, and allied health professionals where required.

Participate in supervision, mentoring, or teaching activities as agreed with the service.

Person Specification

Qualifications Essential

MRCGP or equivalent Diploma in Dermatology or equivalent Full GMC registration with a licence to practise. Recognised GPwER accreditation in Dermatology in line with RCGP guidance, or demonstrable progress towards accreditation. At least 1 year experience of working in dermatology clinics - either in the community or in secondary care Strong clinical judgement, communication, and organisational skills. Ability to work autonomously and within a multidisciplinary NHS environment.

Desirable

Experience working within an NHS England community dermatology or intermediate care service. Competence in dermatological minor surgery in accordance with local governance approvals. Experience in audit, teaching, or service development.

Experience Essential

At least 1 year experience of working in dermatology clinics - either in the community or in secondary care
