Purpose of the Role To lead the strategic direction and execution of the Business Development function in alignment with Debswana’s Strategic Business Plan (SBP). The role provides functional thought leadership and serves as a key driver of the company’s transformation agenda. It is accountable for maximizing the commercial value and long-term resilience of the core diamond business, while simultaneously spearheading the development of a diversified portfolio of new ventures. Through strategic foresight, stakeholder engagement, and rigorous opportunity evaluation, the role ensures that Business Development initiatives contribute meaningfully to sustainable growth and futureproofing of the business. Key Job Responsibilities Actively champion Debswana’s growth and diversification agenda by ensuring effort and investment are appropriately balanced across the three strategic pathways and their respective time horizons Champion and provide ultimate oversight for the Business Development pipeline process, leading opportunity screening, prioritization and business case development, making critical business decisions at key investment gates. Defines key business performance drivers or indicators and ensures that they are measured against signed off targets Direct the overall management of the business development portfolio according to the strategic allocation framework, ensuring a disciplined balance between core optimisation, adjacent growth, and transformational new sector opportunities Ensures that all legislative requirements applicable to operational management are identified, monitored and reported accordingly Filter and synthesize key insights from market analysis, including industry supply/demand dynamics and midstream behavior, to make data-driven recommendations on "where to play and how to win" choices for the business development portfolio. Formulates and executes the Business Development Functional strategy aligned with Debswana’s Strategic Business Plan - Enter new markets and drive sustainable growth Guide and support joint ventures on their business development projects, and support management with post-acquisition or post-partnership integration planning. Lead the company’s perspective on long-term trends and their implications for Debswana’s future success by developing insights on key macroeconomic mega trends and their impact on the diamond and adjacent industries of interest. Manages the Identification and ensures procurement of external assistance to provide expert independent assurance advice and best practice guidance Monitor key disruptive industry trends, particularly the evolution of lab-grown diamonds and competitor strategies, establishing an early warning system to inform Debswana’s strategic choices Oversee the management and coordination of all business development activity in close cooperation with the CFO, Legal, technical, operations and other relevant functions. Provides strategic direction and technical leadership for the Business Development function across Debswana operations including provision of overall assurance in order to meet medium to long-term Debswana technical and operational strategic goals Other Job Responsibilities Develops frameworks and manages the implementation of and adherence to legal and corporate governance principle/requirements Integrate Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles into the core of all investment decisions, ensuring new opportunities enhance Debswana's sustainability credentials and brand reputation. Responsible for and manages the Functional safety, health and the environmental programme in line with organisational strategy and objectives. Build relationships across the Debswana pipeline by sharing business information and knowledge management. Establishes and maintains business partner relationships with all internal and external key stakeholders to facilitate the optimal functioning of the business. Actively pursues a standardized companywide approach around the exchange and protection of information between Group of Companies and individuals to ensure effective knowledge management according to organisational objectives Manages the key subordinate’s effectiveness areas by setting, monitoring and reviewing performance and taking remedial action as necessary. Oversees the implementation of the functional talent management initiatives by ensuring the right competency and effectiveness of manpower Education Degree in Finance/Commerce/Technical or equivalent Experience 10 years post graduate experience in Business Development of which at least 3 years should have been at managerial level.
