This position is responsible for hand-welding or flame-cutting equipment to weld or join metal components or fill holes, indentations, or seams. Follows appropriate safety guidelines and uses safe work habits. Duties and Responsibilities Recognizes, sets up, and operates hand and power tools common to the welding trade, such as a shielded metal arc and gas metal arc welding equipment; operates manual or semi-automatic welding equipment to fuse metal segments, using appropriate welding processes. Welds components for extended periods in flat, horizontal, vertical or overhead positions; monitors the fitting, burning and welding processes to avoid overheating of parts or warping, shrinking, distortion or expansion of material; examines work to ensure conformance to specifications. Analyzes engineering drawings, blueprints, specifications, sketches, work orders, and material safety data sheets to plan layout, assembly, and welding operations; determines required equipment and welding methods, applying knowledge of metallurgy and welding techniques; prepares welding surfaces to be welded. All other duties as assigned. Supervisory Responsibilities No Required Education (certifications, licenses) High school diploma or equivalent Five years of experience as a Pipeline Welder required Welder certification Required knowledge, skill and abilities Ability to successfully qualify on Spire Gulf’s welding procedure within 90 working days (12” butt weld, must bevel pipe,12 “ Branch Saddle (must be able to fit),12” uphill sleeve test with water running through it and 3/4 “ knock off). Ability to work effectively alone and with others in a group or team. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and supervisors. Includes responsibility for others' health and safety—following appropriate safety guidelines and using safe work habits. Must live within thirty (30) minutes of the reporting location in Mobile (2828 Dauphin St. Mobile, AL 36606, as measured during normal daily traffic. Physical demands, environment and schedule Ability to use hands to handle, control, or feel objects, tools, or controls; walk, stand, climb, crouch, crawl, bend or twist; and lift or move heavy objects. Ability to work in confined spaces and maneuver in awkward positions. Ability to repeat the same physical or mental activities over and over. Includes exposure to contaminants, exposure to sounds, and noise levels that are distracting or uncomfortable. Ability to work in very hot (above 90 F degrees) and very cold (below 32 F degrees) temperatures and extremely bright or inadequate lighting conditions. Requires working outdoors, exposed to all weather conditions. Requires exposure to hazardous equipment and conditions. Requires exposure to minor burns, cuts, bites or stings. Requires wearing applicable protective or safety equipment.
