Job Title: Onsite Certified Pharmacy Technician – Prior Authorization and Patient SupportJob DescriptionThis onsite role in Cary, NC focuses on supporting patients with rare diseases by managing prior authorizations, coordinating with manufacturers and insurance companies, and processing pharmacy claims in a specialty pharmacy environment. You will handle a high volume of inbound and outbound calls, ensure accurate documentation, and follow established standard operating procedures to simplify access to medication and support the best possible patient outcomes. Responsibilities • Answer inbound calls from patients, manufacturers, and insurance companies in a professional and courteous manner. • Make outbound calls to patients, insurance companies, and manufacturers to gather information and provide updates on patient cases. • Acquire clinical documentation from providers’ offices to support prior authorization requests for patient therapies. • Submit clinical documentation to insurance companies according to each payer’s specific submission requirements and processes. • Follow up on prior authorization submissions in a timely manner to confirm status and obtain approvals. • Learn and effectively use the pharmacy management system to process patients’ pharmacy claims accurately. • Follow established standard operating procedures every day to produce accurate records and maintain compliance. • Document clear, accurate progress notes for approximately 25–30 calls per day in the appropriate systems. • Communicate proactively and consistently with leadership and team members to share updates and resolve issues. • Maintain strong attention to detail in all aspects of documentation, data entry, and claim processing. • Work independently with minimal guidance while meeting productivity and quality expectations. • Demonstrate compassion toward patients and respect toward fellow teammates in all interactions. • Adapt to changing assignments and priorities in a fast-paced environment. • Use Microsoft Teams and Microsoft Outlook for communication, scheduling, and collaboration. • Contribute to a positive, engaged team culture within a multidisciplinary specialty pharmacy environment. Essential Skills • Strong critical thinking skills to navigate complex prior authorization and insurance processes. • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to remain professional even in challenging interactions. • Demonstrated customer service skills, especially in phone-based or call center environments. • Ability to work independently with limited guidance while maintaining high accuracy and productivity. • Proven attention to detail in data entry, documentation, and claim processing. • Comfort following established standard operating procedures and processes consistently. • Ability to handle and accurately document 25–30 calls per day. • Familiarity with Microsoft Teams and Microsoft Outlook. • Experience obtaining prior authorizations, preferably within a pharmacy or healthcare setting. • Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) credential or pharmacy technician certification preferred. • Active pharmacy technician license preferred, where applicable. • Experience in retail pharmacy or specialty pharmacy environments. • Experience in a call center or high-volume phone support role. • Understanding of insurance processes related to pharmacy benefits and prior authorizations. • General healthcare or pharmacy experience, including data entry and claim processing. Additional Skills & Qualifications • Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) strongly preferred, with experience in retail pharmacy considered a plus. • Experience working in a large or rapidly growing specialty pharmacy environment. • Comfort working with patients who have rare diseases and supporting complex therapy access needs. • Experience using pharmacy management systems to process claims and manage patient cases. • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel for basic tracking or reporting tasks. • Detail-oriented mindset with the ability to pivot quickly in a fast-paced environment. • Ability to learn and follow new processes as assignments and priorities change. • Interest in becoming a Subject Matter Expert through cross-training on all aspects of a specific therapy program. • Openness to contract roles with the potential for conversion to full-time employment based on performance and business needs. Work EnvironmentThis position is fully onsite in an office environment in Cary, NC, working Monday through Friday from 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM with a one-hour unpaid lunch. The specialty pharmacy operates Monday to Friday from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM EST and is closed on weekends and major holidays. You will work as part of a multidisciplinary team of approximately seven employees, collaborating closely but without direct face-to-face patient contact, as all interactions occur via phone and digital communication. Initially, the role is fully onsite, with the potential for increased flexibility once performance and proficiency are established. The environment emphasizes employee engagement, professional conduct, accurate documentation, and adherence to established processes, while offering opportunities for cross-training, subject matter expertise development, and potential conversion from contract to permanent employment. Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract to Hire position based out of Cary, NC. Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $20.00 - $25.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
