POSITION: Staff Accountant Exempt Status: Exempt No. of Days: According to district approved calendar Department: Financial Services Reports To Controller Education: • Bachelor's degree in accounting or comparable work experience Experience:• One to three years of experience POSITION FUNCTION/PURPOSE: Maintain accounting records of the school district in accordance with state and federal regulatory requirements and in accordance with district policy and procedures ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS 1. Ensure that accounting operations are supportive of the instructional goals and objectives of the district. 2. Ensure that the district is in compliance with regulations established by the Texas Education Agency's “Financial Accounting Standards Resource Guide” and generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP). 3. Reconcile bank accounts of the district and correct any errors. 4. Prepare journal entries and assist in the maintenance of the general ledger system. 5. Prepare information returns of the district as required by the IRS. Gather information required to prepare and submit 1099's. 6. Review payment history and analysis for any vendor of the district. 7. Assist Departments and Campuses regarding finance related questions and properly delegate questions to specialized departments. 8. Organize, monitor and record returned checks to all district accounts. 9. Reconcile prepaid postage account 10. Reconcile arbiter pay or any other ACH or Wire payments 11. Compile, maintain and file all physical and computerized reports, records and other documents including auditable information relating to this office. 12. Maintain accurate records to assist with unclaimed property report yearly. 13. Maintain fixed asset records up to date and ready to be audited at year end. 14. Perform unclaimed property records and filing before the deadline. 15. Assist and train employees engaged in finance related activities when requested. 16. Collect data for completion of federal, state and local documents as well as assist in public information requests. 17. Perform other duties as assigned. QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS Special Knowledge/Skills: 1. Technical knowledge of budgeting and governmental accounting 2. Basic knowledge of IRS reporting requirements 3. Working knowledge of data processing systems and financial applications 4. Ability to work with a diverse population in a heavy volume work environment 5. Good communications skills PHYSICAL DEMANDS Working Conditions: 1. Emotional – Maintain emotional control under stress 2. Physical – Moderate carrying and lifting.
