About this role

Job Title: Director of Communications Reports to: Superintendent Dept./School: Community Relations Office Wage/Hour Status: Exempt Pay Grade: Business 6/240 Days Date Revised: 08/28/2026 Primary Purpose: Promote positive media relations between the school district and community. Prepare and provide information to the media and public about the activities, goals, and policies of the school district. Coordinate information flow from the Board of Trustees and superintendent to the parents, staff and community through strong media relations. Qualifications: Education/Certification: Bachelor's degree in journalism, broadcast journalism preferred Special Knowledge/Skills: Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills Demonstrated skills in writing, editing, and public speaking Thorough knowledge of media relations and public relations functions Ability to interpret policy, procedures, and data Ability to use personal computer to design and produce district publications Experience: Three years' experience in journalism, broadcast journalism or communications Major Responsibilities and Duties: Media Relations

• Coordinate and address all media inquiries.

• Facilitate access to requested information for reporters.

• Summarize daily media inquiries, upcoming stories and incidents for the Board of Trustees (BOT) and superintendent.

• Produce television, radio, billboard and newspaper advertisements (paid and unpaid).

• Develop and manage district branding guidelines.

• Coordinate information flow to parents, staff and the media during crisis situations.

• Schedule regular television and radio appearances for the BOT and superintendent.

• Develop initial talking points for media appearances by the BOT and superintendent.

• Oversee weekly district newsletter and administrative newsletters.

• Oversee the district website & social media accounts.

Strategic Communications Support

• Develop communication plans to promote district/school initiatives and emergencies.

• Develop and update emergency phone trees for administrators.

• Organize and facilitate employee/superintendent communications committee.

• Conduct community relations media training for administrators.

• Oversee the development of the academic calendar with assistance from the District Advisory Committee.

Special Events and Campaigns

• Coordinate annual Teacher of the Year Program and Dinner.

• Coordinate annual West Teaching Excellence Awards.

• Coordinate annual High School Scholars Reception.

• Coordinate annual Back to School Staff Assembly.

• Coordinate Veterans Day Ceremony.

• Coordinate High School Graduation Ceremonies.

• Coordinate new School Building Dedication & School Closing Ceremonies.

• Coordinate Board of Trustees Appreciation Reception.

• Coordinate bond referendum information campaigns.

• Coordinate Student and Staff Recognition Program through local media, BOT meetings and Employee appreciation.

• Coordinate PIE Appreciation Dinner and Scholarship Reception (with Community Partnerships Coordinator).

• Coordinate events and banquets as needed/scheduled.

• Coordinate and expand Employee Discount Program.Other
