About this role

Qualifications:

• Must be at least 21 years old.

• High school diploma or equivalent preferred.

• Pleasant and positive personality.

• Have a valid driver's license.

• Ability to assist the public with tact and enthusiasm.

• A genuine passion for working with children.

• Possess and maintain a CDL-B with P&S endorsement, or ability to obtain said license and certification within six months.

• Satisfactorily complete the driver training course conducted by the State Department of Education.

Reports to: Director of Transportation Job Goal: To operate a school bus in accordance with all state laws and regulations and be responsible for maintaining discipline of students being transported. Unlike regular route drivers who follow fixed daily neighborhood pickups, field trip drivers transport students, teachers, and chaperones to variable destinations—including athletic events, educational venues, competitions, and out-of-district locations. This role requires high flexibility and excellent navigational skills. Performance Responsibilities:

• To conduct a pre-trip inspection of the school bus prior to every trip for defects.

• To use established routes and designated bus stops.

• To report bus accidents and student injuries to authorities.

• To conduct emergency evacuation drills in keeping with state regulations.

• To operate the bus on an approved time schedule.

• To maintain discipline of students being transported.

• To drive defensively under varying traffic conditions and inclement weather.

• To operate equipment in accordance with all state laws and regulations.

• To wash bus inside and out. The school district furnishes supplies.

• To report bus defects to supervisor

• To assign students to seats and maintain a current status of students.

• To establish a safe, supportive, positive, and productive environment.

• To exhibit a positive image as a loyal representative of the school district.

• To be alert and exercise good judgment concerning emergencies.

• To maintain a neat and clean personal appearance.

• To complete all paperwork required by the state or by the school district.

• To attend all in-service days required by the school district.

• To perform other duties as required.

Schedule & Availability Requirements: This position does not have a set daily schedule. To be successful in this role, candidates must meet the following availability requirements:

• Open Availability: You must be available to work a highly flexible schedule across all 7 days of the week (Monday through Sunday).

• Variable Hours: Shift times will fluctuate based on the district's event calendar. You must be willing to accept early morning departures, split shifts, late-night returns, and weekend assignments.

• Occasional Overnights: Some state-level competitions or long-distance trips may require overnight stays (lodging and per diem provided).

Physical Demands: In addition to successfully passing the South Carolina Department of Education Physical Performance test, drivers are also expected to be able to assist, move, push, pull, or lift to 50 pounds regularly. Be physically able to withstand prolonged periods of sitting, standing, bending, squatting, walking, reaching, and repetitive movements. Terms of Employment: BD1a FMSD Salary Schedule, 35 hours a week, 180 work days per year. Non-exempt. Salary placement based upon experience and education based on district formula. Evaluation: Performance on this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with the provisions of the board's policy on evaluation of non-certified personnel.
