About this role

Job SummaryThe primary purpose of the Health Technician position is to perform various routine and non-routine patient care activities, procedures, and tasks. The incumbent functions as a member of an interdisciplinary team in a clinical setting and functions day-to-day under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN) and reports to the Nurse Manager in the assigned clinical area for administrative and overall technical supervision.

QualificationsTo qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 09/02/2026. You may qualify based on your experience and/or education, as described below: Individual Occupational Requirements (IOR) Specialized Experience (for positions at GS-4 and above): Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled. OR Education and Training: For GS-5: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree, with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to the position. GS-05 Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade (GS-04) in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: performing administrative tasks, clerical duties associated with patient care and treatment, monitoring vital signs. OR, Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have completed a 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with courses related to the occupation. OR, Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have an combination of specialized experience and at least two full academic years of study, or 60 semester hours, with courses related to the occupation. GS-06 Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade (GS-05) in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: completion of vital signs, to include pain assessments, obtaining preliminary medical histories, routine patient care activities. OR, Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have completed at least 9 semester hours of graduate education with courses related to the occupation. OR, Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have an combination of specialized experience and you must have completed a 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with courses related to the occupation. GS-07 Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade (GS-06) in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: ongoing monitoring of vital signs, performing testing for blood glucose monitoring, ordering and maintaining supplies for unit, transporting specimens and reusable medical equipment to specified location, providing and performing a variety of program support duties. OR, Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have completed one full year (18 semester hours) of graduate education with courses related to the occupation. OR, Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have an combination of specialized experience and you must have completed at least 9 semester hours of graduate education with courses related to the occupation. Major DutiesMajor duties include, but are not limited to: Preparing a variety of technical and administrative tasks in support of clinic operations. Clerical and technical support to the Medical and Nursing staff. Ongoing monitoring of vital signs, performing testing for blood glucose monitoring, arranging and passing medical instruments and materials to medical/nursing professionals for a variety of tests and procedures. Teaching patients and family members the necessity to follow medical staff instruction for proper health care. Stocking supplies in exam rooms. Ordering and maintaining supplies for unit. Transporting specimens and reusable medical equipment to specified location. Promotion Potential: The selectee may be promoted to the full performance level without further competition when all regulatory, qualification, and performance requirements are met. Selection at a lower grade level does not guarantee promotion to the full performance level. Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 0730-1600 Telework: This position may be authorized for ad-hoc telework.
