QualificationsApplicants will be evaluated on their ability to perform the duties of the position rather than the length of experience. National Service Experience (i.e., volunteer experience): Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Major DutiesYou will be responsible for assisting journeymen Shipfitters or Welders with work that cannot be handled alone and also perform less difficult tasks alone. Being a civilian working for the Coast Guard makes you a valuable team member. Typical duties include: * Using power and hand tools common to the trade. * Performing a variety of less difficult tasks related to shipfitting and welding, such as cutting batten wood for templates, tacking templates, center punching fabrication marks on steel. * Assisting in laying out, fabricating and erecting steel; and holding parts to be tacked and performs tack welding. * Assisting in the operation of power machines by holding and feeding metal parts. * Getting tools and supplies, carries materials and lifts and holds items in place while the Shipfitter or Welder is working on them. * Cleaning work area, tools and machines. Mandatory training is required which must be successfully completed and other training may occur as necessary for success in the position.RequirementsAll qualification requirements must be met by the closing date of the announcement. This position requires a Public Trust clearance. -This is a Bargaining Unit position. - Selectee subject to successful completion of pre-employment medical exam. -All Federal employees are required to have Federal salary payments made by direct deposit. - Submit most recent SF50. The Office of Personnel management (OPM) must authorize employment offers made to current or former political appointees. If you are currently, or have been within the last 5 years, a political Schedule A, Schedule, C, Non-career SES or Presidential Appointee employee in the Executive Branch, you must disclose this information to the Human Resources Office.
