QualificationsQualifications for the position are based on the training, experience, or other requirements that determine which applicants would be able to perform satisfactorily in the position to be filled. To qualify for the WG-07, your experience should include ability equal or equivalent to the following: Ability to use tools and equipment used in ship cleaning, coating, and topside maintenance, such as scrapers, scalers, paint spray equipment, vacuums, hand tools, and government-furnished personal protective equipment (PPE) such as protective clothing, eye protection, and respirators. Ability to operate and control a variety of equipment, such as portable generators, air compressors, vacuum equipment, and personnel lifts. The equipment is typically operated in areas that require constant attention to working space and environment due to obstructions, tripping hazards, overhead clearances, ship's rigging and fittings, ladders, bulwarks, coamings, handrails, etc. Your application will also be rated on the following job elements: Ability to do the work of the position. Major DutiesAs a Preservation Servicer, you will: Assure that equipment and materials needed to complete a job are available at the start, and that all environmental, safety and housekeeping rules are being observed. Provide supervisor or work leader with an accurate account of his/her daily work for time keeping purposes. Perform assigned tasks with other work groups and complete the work safely, efficiently and harmoniously. Abide by and enforce all Reserve Fleet Safety Rules, Reserve Fleet programs and policies for assigned crew and abide by all applicable environmental laws and other regulations. The ideal candidate should possess the skill set and ability to work with a crew of mechanics, riggers, and laborers assigned in two major programs aboard vessels in the NDRF: deck and hull coating maintenance; and implementation of MARAD's Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP).RequirementsCONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: SELECTIVE SERVICE: Males born after 12/31/1959 must be registered for the Selective Service. BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION: A background security investigation is required for all selected individuals. Appointment will be subject to the applicant's successful completion of the security investigation and favorable adjudication. Failure to meet these requirements will be grounds for termination. PHYSICAL EFFORT: Potentially hazardous assignments are required. The work requires heavy exertion and is arduous at times, requiring excessive walking, climbing vertical ladders, kneeling, crouching, stooping, working in awkward positions on steel decks and in close quarters, frequent lifting of 50 pounds and infrequent lifting of over 50 pounds with assistance. WORKING CONDITIONS: The employee works outside in all kinds of extreme weather, e.g., heat, cold, precipitation, wind, etc. The equipment, tools, and tasks involve extreme care and use of protective clothing, safety gloves, ear plugs, safety glasses, or respirators to avoid severe injuries. The employee is subject to slippery surfaces, insufficient light and air, soot, dirt, dust, fumes and extremes of heat and cold. May work in cramped, smelly places and in spaces where asbestos and lead-based paint is present; danger to falling overboard or shock from electrical equipment; exposed to tripping hazards and subject to cuts and burns. The employee is required to follow all Reserve Fleet Safety Rules, and is required to wear safety equipment that is provided by the Fleet. Must provide his/her personal clothing and be available for any type of weather conditions. Employee is trained in accordance with the hazards encountered in the course of work. DRUG TEST: This position has been determined to be a critical safety/security position as defined in the Department of Transportation (DOT) Order, DOT 3910.1D entitled "Drug and Alcohol-Free Departmental Workplace." Therefore, if selected for the position you will be required to submit to a pre-employment/pre-appointment drug test, you will also be subject to Random Drug Testing.
